RELEARN PROCEDURE

COMPLAINT: Various complaints related to garage shifts, harsh and/or flared up-shifts and/or
coast downshift bumps.
CAUSE: The TCM has inaccurate learned values and basic settings causing incorrect shift
overlap via the solenoids producing the harsh or flared shift complaints.
CORRECTION: After repairs, rebuild, TCM replacement or TCM software updates, initialization
of the learned values and basic setting will need to be performed. Below is a
relearn procedure for 2006 and later VW vehicles equipped with a 09D or an 09G
transmission.
1. Bring the vehicle up to operation temperature by letting it idle or by driving
it. Do not break torque the engine to raise the temperature. Monitor the
transmission fluid temperature with us of a scan tool or temperature gun.
The manual relearn test must be performed between 150 F (66C) and 230F
(110C). Do not attempt to perform the test outside of this range.
2. With the brake applied AT ALL TIMES.
a.) Shift the lever to N and hold for 3 seconds
b.) Shift the lever to D and hold for 3 seconds and return the lever to N.
(repeat 5 times)
c.) Repeat this same procedure 5 times from N to R.
3. In D drive the vehicle with the throttle opening between 25-30% until 6th
gear is reach at approximately 60 mph (80km/h). Release the accelerator
and coast bringing the vehicle to a stop in 60 seconds minimum. Repeat this
procedure until the original shift complaints are resolved. This may take
repeating this procedure up to 10 times.
