Question 1:

Let f(a ; b) be the sum of all the positive integers between

a and b inclusive. For example,

f(1 ; 5) = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15.

Determine the value of f(13 ; 53)

N = 41 terms = 53 13 + 1

S = n ( first term + last term)

2

= 41 ( 13 + 53)
2
= 41 ( 66 ) / 2
= 41 (33)
= 1353

In how many different ways can these people be

arranged in a line next to each other for the
photograph if the bride and groom must be
together?

Couple can be seen as one person.

__4 __ __3__ __2__ __1__ = 24

Since bride and groom can switch sides in any of the

above arrangements = times 2

24 2 = 48 ways

Question 7:

Let x, y be two positive integers. Suppose x2 = 40 + y2.

Find the largest possible value of (x - y).

x2 - y2 = 40
(x y)(x + y) = 40

Only possible terms that can produce integers for x and y

are

xy=4
x + y = 10

2x = 14
x = 7, thus y = 3

Other combinations like 8 and 5 or 1 and 40

result in an odd sum, which will not give us integers for
x and y.

Question 8:

A spiral staircase, with a constant slope, circles around

the outside of the water tower exactly twice according to
the diagram below. What is the length of this staircase?

242 + 72 = 252

12/ C= 2(12/)= 24

7 25

14

7 25

Therefore, total length is 25 + 25 = 50 m

Question 9:

What is the largest prime factor of 799 + 7100 + 7101 ?

799 + 7100 + 7101 = 799 ( 1 + 71 + 72)

= 799 (57)
= 799 (3 29)

Therefore the largest prime is 29.
