turn and talk to their neighbor and answer
How do people get around?
We are going to watch this video:

Now, take one minute to turn and talk to your
neighbor again about what surprised you? Was
anything in the video that you have never seen
before?

Teacher: You will construct a timeline of

2. Statement of Objective transportation, as well as explain why certain
for Student
10 sec
advancements in transportation are important to
our state.
3. Teacher Input Teacher: What do you think was the most 8 min
important invention of technology for our
transportation development?
Possible student answers: the car, the boat, the
plane.
Teacher: Many people would argue that the
wheel is one of the most important
advancements of technology, if not the very
most important. It was invented about 5,000
years ago. What are some inventions or forms
of transportation that you can think of that use
the wheel?
Possible student answers: car, plane,
wheelbarrow.
Teacher: Very good. You can find the wheel in
inventions from the past and inventions that are
still being done. Some of you may have
guessed that the boat was the most important
invention for transportation. Why do you think
the boat was so important?
Student: It took supplies back and forth
Teacher: Yes, thats exactly right. Boats
allowed the people in North Carolina to
transport goods. Who do you think used boats
most? People who lived in the mountains, the
piedmont, or the coast? And why?
Student: The coast because there is water
Teacher: Exactly. Another form of
transportation that Im sure everyone is familiar
with is the plane. The plane is really neat for us
to learn about because the Wright Brothers
were the first people to successfully fly a plane
and does anyone know where that took place?
Student: North Carolina?
Teacher: The Wright Brothers did in fact fly
their plane on the coast of North Carolina at
Kitty Hawk.

Teacher: I have pictures of a canoe, self-driving

car, bicycle, steamboat, commercial airplane,
wheel, steam locomotive, wright brothers first
plane, and a horse. I need to organize these
pictures somehow. Does anyone have an idea
of how I could organize all of these?
Student: By when they were invented
Teacher: Good, thats perfect! So, lets make a
timeline now. Draw a line on the board without
4. Guided Practice any dates because before/after is more 5 min
important. What do you think are the first and
last pictures to go on the timeline? What comes
next? Why do you think that? Does everyone
agree? Raise your hand if you agree with this.
Keep going until the majority agrees. Here is
the accurate timeline. Pull it up on the
computer linked to the smartboard. Does
anyone have any concerns about the timeline
that I need to clarify?

In a graphic organizer, students will choose 3

advancements in transportation and write 2-3
sentences each and explain why they think it is 15
5. Independent Practice
and has been important for the people in North min
Carolina. They will then construct their own
timeline of these 5 events.

Formative assessment: 3 advancements explanation

6. Assessment Methods of Summative assessment: Students must earn 7 out of 9

all objectives/skills: points to reach mastery.
2 points per form of transportation & explanation (6
points) 3 points for timeline
7. Closure Exit ticket- Think and Wonder: Draw a picture 3 min
of what do you think the future of
transportation might look like?

all objectives/skills:

Targeted Students Student/Small Group Modifications/Accommodations:

Modifications/Accommodations:
English Language Learners: Teacher will include
visuals, label the forms of transportation in the home
language, and turn on the subtitles for the video.

IEP students: Teacher will read text aloud as necessary.

Struggling students: Will be given a timeline with 5

empty slots where they can fill in their 5 chosen
advancements.

Early finishers: Students who finish early can add 2

more advancements/ explanations to their graphic
organizer. After that, they can write an explanation
about how the future form of transportation that they
drew helps people.
Materials/Technology:
(Include any instructional materials (e.g., worksheets, assessments PowerPoint/SmartBoard slides, etc.) needed to implement
the lesson at the end of the lesson plan.)

Reflection on lesson: (Write several paragraphs about what you learned from this
lesson. What were the strengths? What were the weaknesses? What did you learn
about teaching and student learning? How would you teach this lesson differently in
the future?
I feel like this lesson went pretty well. I was nervous because I was teaching this
lesson on the same day as my Math and Literacy lessons. I didnt feel prepared
enough to teach pretty much all day, but once I was in front of the class delivering
the lesson, I was more relaxed. From that, one thing I learned was that I shouldnt
stress so much about the planning aspect. Yes, I should definitely plan well, but the
fact is that no matter how much I plan, it isnt going to go exactly that way. As long
as I know the main points that need to be covered, I will be fine. I had never taught
a Social Studies lesson before and really had only ever observed two Social Studies
lessons, so that also made me a lot more nervous.

The classroom I was in only had a time block for Social Studies for 30 minutes
every other week. I wanted to wait to teach my lessons as much as I could so that I
could get a really good feel for how each discipline was handled and structured.
Unfortunately, most of the times that I observed, even on the days they were
supposed to have a Social Studies lesson, they did not end up having one. I did not
get done with everything that I had originally planned to do, so I need to work on
managing my time or at least work on getting a feel for how much I will be able to
get done in an alotted time. I think that will mainly come with time. I also could
have done better with wait time for the students. I did not always give them time to
think about their answer before asking for a show of hands.

I am really glad that I had this opportunity. I feel like I learned a lot from it. My CT
was very nice but I could tell that she and I had very different learning styles. That
made it a little bit difficult and stressful for me at times but Im sure it will be
beneficial in the end. I feel like I learned a lot from planning this lesson, teaching
this lesson, and just from the whole experience. Even though its still hard for me to
prepare for lessons, I know that the more I practice, the better I will get!
