Emotions Inside Out Analysis
Purpose

This assignment allows you to:


Explain the factors that cause differences in attitudes and behaviour between people in different
contexts.
Apply relevant psychological principles by analysing and presenting a range of points of view, giving
examples of the thinking and reasoning behind them.
Evaluate and organise psychological information effectively to demonstrate understanding of key ideas

Description of Assessment

Inside Out is a 2015 film following 11 year old Riley Anderson as she makes the move with her parents
from Minnesota to San Francisco. Rileys thoughts and behaviour are guided by her emotions that live in
her Headquarters, the control centre of Rileys mind. But as Riley tries to adjust to the move, the 5
emotions; Fear, Disgust, Anger, Sadness and Joy, struggle to agree as to how to navigate the challenges
she now faces.

Inside out was met with critical acclaim and praise for its symbolic and powerful representation of the
workings of a young mind and the complexities of emotions and personality during youth. Your task is to:

Write a response to the following;

1. Design another emotion that could be present in Rileys Headquarters. Base this emotion on
Plutchiks Emotion Wheel (can be primary or secondary). Why is this emotion important; what role
does this emotion play for Riley?
2. Using the three components of emotion (subjective feelings/cognition, expressive behaviour and
physiological arousal) describe the emotions traits, behaviours, beliefs and appearance. Compare
this to the components of another emotion in Rileys Headquarters (Fear, Disgust, Anger, Sadness
and Joy).
o Remember to consider:
Personal experiences, reasoning and beliefs
Knowledge, understanding of the scenario
Non-verbal expression; Facial expressions, body language and gestures
Verbal expression; Language use, tone
3. Describe a scenario where Riley would be controlled by your chosen emotion.
o Explain how Rileys experience would be influenced by your chosen emotion using the
James-Lange, Cannon-Bard and Schacter-Singer theories of emotion.
o Describe this experience using the four levels of explanation.
o How could another emotion within Riley help to resolve this
issue?

Assessment Conditions

You may present your response as a word processed /written report,


or as an oral presentation (class/multimedia/recorded video). You will
have one single and a double lesson to work on this in class (with
access to laptops). You will also have a week of homework time.

Your response should be no longer than 800 words (presentation

10% of your overall grade. Remember to reference any sources
you use correctly in a bibliography.
