S-399 [Seat [No. B.E. (Mechanical) (Semester — VII) (New Course) Examination, 2012 FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS Sub. Code : 47981 Day and Date : Monday, 14-5-2012 Total Marks : 100 Time : 2.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. Instructions : i) Answer three questions from each Section. Q.4 and Q. 8 are compulsory. ii) Figures to right indicate full marks. iii) Assume if necessary suitable data and state them clearly. iv) Draw neat labelled sketch wherever necessary. v) Use of non-programmable calculators is permissible. SECTION—I 1. a) Explain general steps of FEM using a simple 1-D element for thermal analysis. of heat conduction through a composite wall. 8 b) Obtain the variational form of a differential equation. 8 2. Analyse the axially loaded stepped bar shown in figure below. Use the finite element method (element and global matrix) to predict the nodal displacements Up, Ug and u, at the nodes 2, 3 and 4, and the support reaction R at the fixed node 1 (u, = 0). The cross sectional areas are 50 mm?, 20 mm? and 10 mm?, the lengths of steps are 10 mm each and the modulus of elasticity is 200 GPa. 16 Nodes: 1,2,3,4 Elements: 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 Pro. S-399 = 3. a) Calculate the shape functions for the following triangular element. And hence find the temperature at the point (2, 2) ifthe nodal temperatures of the element are @, = 20°C, @ = 100°C and @, = 150°C. 8 b) What are higher order (quadratic, cubic, etc.) elements ? Sketch their shape functions (interpolation polynomials). 8 4. Write short notes on (any three) : 18 i) Principle of minimum potential energy ji) Node and element numbering iii) Galerkin’s Method iv) Basic element shapes and behaviour v) isoparametric elements. SECTION-II 5. a) State the preprocessing steps involved to model a mechanical element (e.g.,a bracket), perform a static analysis and view results using commercial FEA software. 8 b) Fora one-dimensional bar element prove that the displacement through the element (with a linear variation) is given by U,,) = NU; + N\U;, where the shape functions Nj = (xj—x)// and Nj= (—x)/I. Also plot N; and N over the length of the element. Evaluate (N; + N)), and (dN/dx+dNj/dx). 8 ey 6. a) Explain the meaning of assembly of element equations, incorporation of boundary conditions and solutions of equations in FEA. b) Explain how size and number of elements in FE mesh are related and their effect on the solution accuracy. 7. a) For the simply supported beam shown in figure below state the displacement and slope boundary conditions. Also, check whether the function y = A sin (1x/I) satisfies the boundary conditions. Next find the arbitrary constant A by collocation method by making residual zero at x = 1/2. The differential equation for beam being Eld2y/dx2-M, =0, 0
