TUTORIAL SHEET-3

1 Determine the magnitude of F1 and F2 so that

particle P is in equilibrium.

2 Determine the force in cables AB and AC

necessary to support the 12 kg traffic light.

3 Cords AB and AC can each sustain a maximum

tension of 800 N. If the drum has a weight of
900N, determine the smallest angle at which
they can be attached to the drum.

4
5 Determine the maximum weight of the
flowerpot that can be supported without
exceeding a cable tension of 50 N in either
cable AB or AC.

6 The ball D has a mass of 20 kg. If a force of F=

100N is applied horizontally to the ring at A,
determine the largest dimension d so that the
force in cable AC is zero

7 A ball weighting 100 N is at rest in a right angle

trough as shown in fig. Determine the forces
exerted on the sides of the trough at D and E.
Assume all surfaces to be smooth.

8 Two identical rollers, each weighing 120 N are

placed in a trough as shown in fig. Assuming all
surfaces of contact are smooth, find the
reactions developed at the contact surfaces.
9. In each of the following examples, the body to be isolated is shown in the left hand diagram, and an
incomplete free-body diagram (FBD) of the isolated body is shown on the right. Add whatever forces are
necessary in each case to form a complete free body diagram.
10. Draw a complete and correct free-body diagram (FBD) of each of the following.
