Title: The Production of Nontoxic Water Soluble Carbon based Quantum Dots with MPA as a
Surface Ligand
Abstract:
Quantum dots are nanoparticles that exhibit the quantum confinement phenomenon that allows it
to have semiconducting and fluorescence capabilities. CdSe quantum dots are the most
commonly produced. However, they are toxic and unstable under physiological conditions
making it difficult to utilize them as fluorescent marker in medical imaging applications.
Therefore, this thesis focused on using carbon for the core of the quantum dot and MPA as the
surface ligand. To achieve this, the thermochemical method of nanomaterials used utilizing
carbohydrates (sucrose, glucose, and fructose) as carbon sources to form the quantum dots. At
this moment it has been confirmed that the methodology is feasible and reproducible, however
the results need to be further characterized and tested for stability and cytotoxicity under
physiological conditions.
