Objective: The student will compare both plans and analyze why representation was a major topic
argued by the reformers.
Apply and extend previous Knowledge towards the creation of the Constitution of the United States.
Anticipatory Set:
Think back to how we learned what states were large and small. Which states would hold a large
representative body in the new government? Which states are small in representation?
Large- Massachusetts, New York, Maryland, N. Carolina, Pennsylvania, s. Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut.
Today we are going to learn what the Virginia and New Jersey plans represented.
Information:
The following chart will be used to introduce to be used by the students to compare and contrst the
differences and similarities of both plans.
Have the students write the similarities and differences of both plans:
Have the students group in two. First to read-Left side partner will read the Virginia plan and discuss.
Second to read-Right side partner will read the New Jersey plan and discuss. Each partner will have 20
seconds to read and discuss their assigned plan. Each group will read a proposed idea from one of the
plans.
How long do you have before I give the signal to switch roles?
Using individual paper students will answer 3 questions given about the plans:

The New Jersey plan was proposed as another option to the Virginia Plan. How did this plan differ from
the Virginia Plan?
