Light colored roofs (or zinc alum) reflect the heat

www.whiteroofproject.org/faq

A white roof is painted with solar reflective white coating and reflects up to 90% of

sunlight (as opposed to traditional black roofs which reflect only 20%). A white roofs

are a lot more than just white paint! White roofs' benefits are measured partly

according to the solar reflectance index, or SRI. A roof's SRI is a measure of a

surface's ability to reflect solar heat. SRI measures reflectance (reflecting the sun's

rays) and thermal emittance (the roof's ability to radiate absorbed heat). If you've

ever worn a black t-shirt in the sun than you already understand that black's

reflectance is negligible and its emittance is zero. A white roof's reflectance is as

high as 90% and its emittance is 100%. Learn more from our friends at the Cool Roof

Rating Council.

2. Correctly sized eaves can provide permanent shade to north and south

windows and walls (northern verandas make sense

3. Maximize the area of windows (e.g. louvres) that can be opened

4. Dirty fly-screens block more breeze. Consider using operable/removable fly-
screen shutters
5. FACADE DESIGN
Use of Double-layered faade
Use Low-emissivity glass (Low-E glass)
Use of Insulation
Low-emissivity glass (or low-e glass as it is commonly referred to) is a type of
energy-efficient glass designed to prevent heat escaping through your windows to the
cold outdoors. Low-e glass such as Pilkington K Glass has an invisible coating
which dramatically reduces heat transfer and reflects interior heat back into your
room.

6.CROSS VENTILATION
The circulation of fresh air through open windows, doors or other openings on
opposite sides of a room

7.STACK EFFECT / CHIMNEY EFFECT

The tendency of air or gas in a shaft or other vertical space to rise when
heated, creating a draft that draws in cooler air or gas from below

8. SUNSHADING DEVICES
VERTICAL TYPES
Vertical Sun Shades are generally used on the East-Facing and West- Facing
Sides
of a building
EGGCRATE TYPES
Combination of Horizontal and Vertical Shades

10 Shading can be provided by

o Natural landscaping
o Building elements such as
Awnings
Overhangs
Trellises
11 Some shading devices can also function as reflectors, called light shelves,
which bounce natural light for day lighting deep into building interiors.
