Title: How to use the Dash to answer math questions?

Grade: Kindergarten

Overall Goal:

Students will be able do addition and subtraction within ten, recognize colors, and
recognize shapes such as square, rectangle, triangle, and circle. Also, they will be able to use
shapes to represent addition and subtraction within ten, so they will develop abstraction skill.
Since we will teach students how to make the Dash & Dot Robotmoveinspecificwaysbyusing
iPads, they willbeabletodescribethepositionofobjectsandthemovingdirectionofobjects.By
learning how to operate the Dash & Dot Robot to a specific place, students will be able to
develop computational thinking skills in algorithm and deconstructing problems. For the final
assessment, students should be able to apply what they learn about addition, subtraction,
geometry, colors, and basic programming. into operating the Dash & Dot Robot to move to the
specific blocks on a big cardboard.

Lesson Introduction (Hook, Grabber):

The Dash & Dot Robot itself is attractive enough for kids. In the beginning of the class,
students will sayHitotheDash&DotRobot.Theteacherwilldemonstratethefancythingsthat
the Dash & Dot Robot can do, including moving, nodding, speaking, flashing, and changing
colors. Then, students will watch a video about introducing the Dash & Dot Robot
(https://youtu.be/9nM3WsevvfM). After that, the teacher will tell students that they will use the
Dash & Dot to answer math questions, so they need to learn some mathbeforeplayingwiththe
Dash&Dot.Inthisway,studentswillbeexcitedandtheirattentionwillbegrabbed;theywillhave
more passion to learn math as well because they know they can play with the Dash & Dot after
learning math.

Lesson Main:

Part I (Day 1): Color and Shape

The teacher will start teaching color and shape. First, we will teach a song about colors
(https://youtu.be/pUPM3DtK9so). This song lists eleven colors, including red, orange, yellow,
green, blue, purple, white, grey, black, brown, and pink, and the four real-world objects in each
color. By learning this song, studentwillknowthenamesofeachcolorandhoweachcolorlooks
like. After that, the teacher will begin to introduce shapes. As our goal is just let students to be
able to recognize each shapes, so we do not need to cover detailsaboutthepropertiesofeach
shape. Students will a Youtube video about shapes (https://youtu.be/0MfwZHSO9lA). This video
is talking about both shape and color, so students can not only know the names of shapes, but
also review the names of colors. This video teach students to recognize circle, square, triangle,
and rectangle. Then, student willplaytheColorandShapeMatchingGametoreviewwhatthey
learn. The teacher will print out the color cards and shape cards
(https://docs.google.com/a/umail.iu.edu/document/d/1AtvM74HgGDjLQwXUO3Ny2PZmowCFobw

pick two different shapes in different colors. First, students need to describe the cardstheypick
by using the sentence structure This is a name of color nameofshape .Then, theywill
match(classify) their shapes by putting them into color box or shape box. They can choose to
classify their shapes by either color or shape. For example, if a student pick a red circle, he can
choose to put it to eitherredboxorcirclebox.Attheendoftheday, studentsshouldbeable
to recognize and name each color and shape.

Part II (Day 2): Addition and Subtraction

The teacher will start by reviewing counting from 1 to 20. Then the teacher will teach
addition and subtraction using four short worksheets one by one
(https://docs.google.com/a/umail.iu.edu/document/d/1rgMVlucBGycK--D2IXUBOeuZwOdFuqTjZtj
DUMBlYV0/edit?usp=sharing). The first two worksheets are about addition; the last two
worksheets are aboutsubtraction.Theworksheetsareusingcirclestorepresentnumbers,sothe
students will not only able to know how to do additions and subtractions within 10, but also use
shapes to represent numbers to do additions and subtractions within 10. The teacher will go
through the methods first, then show them how to figure out the answer by giving four or five
example questions on each worksheet. After giving out examples, students will have time to
figure out 2 to3questionsoneachworksheetontheirowningroupsoftwo.Duringthisprocess,
the teacher will walk around to see if any student need help. Some students might have
difficulties in learning math, so the website Math Games will be introduced at the end of the
class (https://www.mathgames.com/). The teacher will demonstrate how to use this website in
class. If the Internet is not accessible, the teacher will make a screencastvideobeforeclassand
show students the screencast video instead. Also, the four worksheets will be collected at the
end of the class to be graded.

Part III (Day 3): Direction & Operating the Dash & Dot
In the beginning of the class, the teacher will start teaching four directions: forward,
backward, left, and right. A small game will be hold toenhancestudents`memory.Everystudent
will stand up, the teacher will give out orders about direction, such as go forward one step, turn
left, and so on. Then, the direction worksheet will be given out
(https://docs.google.com/a/umail.iu.edu/document/d/1RhAt_O0wqejDYQj7YG3rSknzyq0rKEMo4P
XZnuO5soU/edit?usp=sharing). Students can work in groups of two or three to finish the
worksheet.
When the direction worksheets are finished and collected, the teacher will assign
students in groups of three or four, which is also the group for the final project. Theteacherwill
give each group a Dash Robot, and they can name their own DashRobot. Then, theteacherwill
introduce the iPad AppDash&DotGobyavideo(https://youtu.be/4Wpy0PtP9aQStartat0:40,
then skip0:55to2:45,continueat2:45totheend).Thisvideowillteachstudentshowtooperate
the Dash Robot to move forward, backward, turn left, and turnrightbyusingfingers.Fortherest
of theclass,studentswillworkingroupsandtaketurnstopracticemovingtheirDashRobot.One
student will give out orders, such as use three steps to move the Dash to the window; one
student will operate the Dash; the other two students will evaluate if he/she is doing right, or if
there is other ways to finish the task. If time is enough, students can watch the rest of Dash &
Dot Go Tutorial video to explore other fancy functions of the Dash Robot.

Lesson Ending:

The final assessment will be a Dash Robot Game. Students will workingroupsofthree
or four. The teacher will show the video about the instruction of this activity
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbR4CarDdVI&feature=youtu.be).Acardboardismadeforthis
activity. On the cardboard, there are 20 blocks; each block contains a number or a colorful
shapes. Three set of questions cards are prepared; each cardcontainsanadditionproblem(e.g.
2+3, +), or a subtraction problem (e.g. 6-1, -), or a name of color shape (blue circle, red
square). Eachgroupwillpickaquestioncardrandomly,figureoutthequestioningroup,andthen
operate the Dash Robot to the block that contains the answer. Every time they get the correct
answer and move the Dash to the correct block, they will earn 10 points. If they get the correct
answer but do not move the Dash to the correct block, they will earn 5points.Iftheydonotget
the correct answer, they will not get any point. At the end of the game, the winner will be the
team that get the highest points. It is an assessment of all thethingtheyhavelearned, including
color and shape, addition and subtraction, and direction. Also, this activity also develop the
computationalthinkingskillsindeconstructingproblemsandalgorithm.Theyneedtodeconstruct
the task into small tasks: figure out the answer on the question cards first, then figure out the
moving directions of the Dash, and operate the Dash at last. In the second process, which is
figuring out the moving directions, they need to move the Dash step by step in a certain order,
which develop their algorithm skill. Some students might have difficulty with completing this big
task, so they will work with other students who have higher abilities. Also, the teacher can give
them more time to work in the task, or give them more opportunities to practice.
The lesson will be end with a class discussion. The teacher willholdthediscussiontolet
students talk about what theyhavelearned.Attheend,theteacherwillconcludewhattheyhave

Differentiation:

1. Differentiation for ability levels

High ability learners: During the Dash & Dot Project, high ability learners will act as the
group leaders. There will be one or more high ability learner at each board game group.
Low ability learners: TheymighthavehardtimelearningmathandprogrammingtheDash
& Dot. The website Math Games will be introduced. They will get extra attention and
help from teachers while doing all activities by giving them more specific instructions.
They will work with the high ability learners during the Dash & Dot Project.

2. Differentiation for demographics

Boys might bemorefamiliarwithrobotstaffsoitmightbeeasierforthemtogetstartedin
operating the Dash&Dot. DuringtheDash&DotProject,eachgroupwillhavebothboys
and girls, so that boys can help girls if needed.

3. Differentiation for languages
Non-native speakers: They might have hard time understanding the names ofshapeand
positional words. Pictures will be used to helpthemunderstandallthosewords, andthey
will get extra help from teachers. Also, teachers will provide a vocabulary list intheirfirst
language version.

4. Differentiation for access & resources
iPads: There might not be enough iPads for every student to practice with operating the
Dash & Dot. Students can take turns to practice.
Internet: The Internet is not needed in this lesson.TheiPadAppwillstillworkwithoutthe
Internet as long as it has been downloaded already.

Anticipated Difficulties:

One anticipated difficulty would be children struggling with math. The website Math
Games will be introduced tothestudents(https://www.mathgames.com/).Inthiswebsite,
students can do more practice on addition and subtraction problems in their grade level.
Another anticipated difficulty would be technology. Ipads are needed for operating the
Dash. If there is no enough iPads for students to practice, they can take turns to usethe
iPad. In addition, the Internet is needed during the teaching process to watch some
videos. If the Internetisnotaccessible,theteacherwilldownloadthosevideosbeforethe
class.
