- A STUDY WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO EDAKKARA GRAMA PANCHAYATH

Introduction
The Information Technology refers to the use of electronic computers and software to store,
process, transmit and retrieve information. The use of Information Technology offers several advantages
such as efficient use of scarce resources, increased operating efficiency, reduced transaction costs,
lower cost for information storage, processing and communication, etc.
The emergence of Information Technology has fueled the economic growth of our country. In
addition to the economic growth Rural Development also includes the improvements in the capabilities
of the population, such as education, health and nutrition, etc.
This project is an attempt to evaluate the role information technology in rural development with
special reference to Edakkara Panchayath. Edakkara is emerging as one of the main township in the East
Eranad region under nilambur taluk of malappuram district.

Significance of the Study


India is the seventh largest country in the world by geographical area. It is second most
populous country with 1.2 billion people. More than 70% of our population lives in villages. So our
nations development is possible only through the development of rural areas. In Kerala there are 14
districts. they are further divided into 62 taluks, 999 revenue villages and 1007 Gram panchayats.
Kerala is a 100% literate state with 33 million people. Malappuram is the first district to secure
100% computer literacy. So this study is highly relevant as it examine the extent to which this
information technology has led to development of rural areas in terms of income, education, health, etc.

Statement of the Problem


Malappuram district is the first district to declare as 100% computer literate district in our
country. All most all of our villages have the computer access through Akshaya centeres. It is true the
information is mainly useful to the big corporates in the urban areas. How ever the IT have inevitable
role in the economic and social development of rural areas. This study will examine whether the
information technology has actually lead to the rural development or not.

Study Objectives
The specific objectives of the study will be
1. To examine the role of Information Technology on the economic development of rural areas
2. To examine the role of Information Technology on the social development rural areas
3. To assess the extent to which the rural development has caused by Information technology
4. To analyse the prosepects of Information Technology in rural development in the coming future

Methodology and Data Collection

a. Scope of the study


This study is will cover the area of Edakkara Grama panchayath under eranad taluk, malappuram
district
b. Smapling plan
From the Edakkara panchayath 3 villages will be selected randomly and from every village 10
families each will be surveyed. So information from a total sample size 30 families will be collected for
purpose of this study
c. Tolls for analysis
Appropriate statistical tools such as averages, tables , graphs etc will be used for analysis. MS excel
will also be used for making data analysis.
Chapterisation
The scheme of the project will be presented in the following chapters

1. Introduction
2. Review of Literature(Theoritical Framework)
3. Analysis and Interpretations
4. Finding, suggestions and Conclusion

Limitations of the study


1. The shortage of time and money will limit the number of samples into the minimum.
2. The advanced statistical tolls are not applied
