Story Time

Allyssa Sanders

First grade reading

Common Core Standards:

Key Ideas and Details:

Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or
lesson.

Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.

Craft and Structure:

Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.

Explain major differences between books that tell stories and books that give information,
drawing on a wide reading of a range of text types.

Identify who is telling the story at various points in a text.

Integration of Knowledge and Ideas:

Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.

Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories.

Lesson Summary:

Each student picks a story to read. Their goal is to create two summaries from the story. The first
summary is a picture summary, they get to design a comic strip using the computer or self -drawn. The
second summary is a written summary (since they are younger they will be written out in question
and answer form). Around the classroom there will be QR codes set up around the class giving them
questions about their story and they will have to write them down and answer them.

Estimated Duration:

This lesson will take 4 hours depending on how long it takes to create each summary. I will be dividing
it into 4-5 days and 50-60 minutes a day (depending on the day)

Commentary: I plan on getting the students hooked by showing them examples of what they are doing. I
feel they will be most interested in creating the comic strip summary. I foresee the written summary being
challenging for them. To help with that, the day before they start it we will do a class summary. Where we
are to read a story and go through all the QR codes and answer them based off of the story.

Instructional Procedures:

Day 1:
First 10-15 minutes, going over the lesson and splitting them in half
They will read their books for 15-20 minutes
For the rest of the time (35 minutes), half will be working on their comic strip (drawing it out or using
their IPad or Computer to create it) and the other half will be walking around with their IPads and
answering the QR code questions (for an example, who is the main character of your story?)

Day 2:
First 10-15 minutes, going over what they need to do today and get feedback so far on how they like the
lesson
For 45 minutes the other half will work on their comic strip and the other will work on their questions
During that time I will be walking around the classroom answering any questions they might have and help
whoever needs it

Day 3:
The first 15-20 minutes I will be going over stuff about their summarys and going over an example one
(This day will be cut short because I dont want to over work them or confuse the since they are younger)
For 20 minutes they will be starting or finishing their written summarys

Day 4:
*Depending on how far the students are along*
First 10-15 minutes, we will go over any questions and go over what they need to do
For 40 minutes, *If they need to, they will be finishing their summarys and comic strip*
If they have it done, I will look over it and edit it and work one-on-one with students

Day 5:
Presentation day!! They get to read their summaries for front of the class and share their comic strip
Later that I will hang up their comic and summaries outside of the classroom for other students to see

Pre-Assessment:
For a pre-assessment I will be doing a questioner, where each student will have a white board and I
will be asking question about a story I read to them before- hand.

Scoring Guidelines:
I will scoring it based off of observations, how long it takes each student to answer and what they
answer too. Based off of that information I will know what to go over before we start.

Post-Assessment:
For my post-assessment I will be doing a short quiz. Like before I will be reading them a short story
and I will ask them the questions aloud and they will write down their answer.

Scoring Guidelines:
When looking at the quizzes, I will be scoring on comprehension. If most student one or more
specific questions then I will know what I need to go back over.

Differentiated Instructional Support

For student who are accelerating I can have they write out a paragraph instead of the question and
answer form like everyone else will be doing
For student who are struggling, I can make the questions more simple for them so they are able to
understand them and answer them

Extension
http://www.adaptedmind.com/reading.php This is a website where the students can work more on reading
the story and answering questions.
Homework Options and Home Connections
Since my students are younger for homework, I will read out to their parents. I will send home the link
above and also tell them when their students are reading to them ask them questions like, who are the
main characters, where is the setting, etc.

Interdisciplinary Connections
When doing this lesson I can relate it to music and art. When finding out about music and art, we
might ask similar questions that were used in the QR codes (like, who wrote this piece of music or
where is this artist from?) questions like that. And when doing this lesson, these students will have a
gate way to answer similar questions.
