EngageMuslims
Closemadrasasandmakesecularschoolingmandatory
GiveStateencouragementtoSufismandotherSpiritualpracticesandputdown
Wahabism.

Iknowmanypeoplewouldnthavethoughtmuchaboutthesethreesuggestionsatthat
time.Butithadtakenalotofthoughtandthinkingtocomeupwiththesethreethings.
IhavehadthebenefitofengagingwithMuslimsatthegrassrootsinUPduring,whatI
believewasoneoflargeststudiesofitskindforMinoritiesWelfareBoard,wherewe
wenttoover60villagestalkingtoyouth,elders,Maulvis,teachers,intelligentsiain
Masjids,Wakfboards,Madrasasetc.WeevenvisitedDeobandandothermajor
schools.Ourperspectivewasdifferentandfromadetachedstandpoint,andsohadits
ownmerit.

Today,IwasamazedtoreadanarticlewhichsuggeststhatPakistanitselfinviewof
theTalibansoffensiveandregularblastsandsuicidebombingsasthecountryplunges
intomoreandmoredarknesshasstartedtomoveonthe3rdsuggestionIhadmade
forIndia.ThemovetoSufism!

OnJune7,PakGovernmentannouncedthecreationofaSufiAdvisoryCouncil(SAC).
ThisistopitchSpiritualitywithintheIslamicrealmsagainsttheSuicideBombers
withinitsfold.

Barelviscurrentlyrepresent,tosomeextent,theSufiethosinPakistan.Theother
groupisDeobandiswhofollowtheWahabiSchoolofThought/Religion,whichI
arguedagainst.MuftiSarfrazNaeemi,aseniorBarelvileaderfromLahore,had
recentlycomeupagainsttheTaliban.OnJune12,aftertheannoucementofthe
council,Naeemiwaskilledinasuicidebombblastwhenateenagerblewhimselfupin
themadrassainLahore,whereNaeemihadhisoffice.

Itisclearthatthisisadifficultundertaking.Apartfromthesupposedlygoodintent,
itwouldbeinterestingtoseewhatPakistaniGovernmentCONSIDERSSufismand

whatitdoesnt.Becauseifitplacespeoplefromextremistorganizationsinguiseof
Sufisthenitsjustashamanyways!Pakistanoratleastthatregionhasaveryrich
traditionofsomegreatSufiSaintsSultanBahu,WarrisShah,BullehShahetc.It
wouldindeedbeatragedyiftheirnameisusedtocreateashamsuchthatSufismitself
becameajoke.

Thereishowever,onebasicissuewithSufismfromthestandpointofstrictreadingof
QuranandfollowingMohammadsedictsinthebookandtheHadiths.Whichisthat
ANYdeviationfromwhatMohammadsaidthatGodwhisperedinhisearorhowheled
hislifeisconsideredBidah.ThedefinitioninShariaforBidahis:

Aninnuendointhereligion,inimitationoftheSharia(prescribedLaw),bywhichnearness
toGodissought,[but]notbeingsupportedbyanyauthenticproofneitherinits
foundations,norinthemannerinwhichitisperformed

Asiftounderscorethispoint,Mohammadstated:

Whosoeveroriginatesaninnuendointhismatterofours[i.e.,Islam]thatisnotapartofit,
willhaveitrejected.

ThedeviancefromastrictedictandlifecasestudyofMohammad(asarticulatedin
Hadiths)issoseverelyfrowneduponinIslamthat`AbdAllahibn`Umarsaid:

isoneFamily,theHumanFamily,whichunitestheChildrenofEarth
indiscriminatelyintheParenthoodofGod.
ThereisOneMoral,theLovewhichspringsforthfromselfdenialandbloomsin
deedsofbeneficence.(alternative,sourceunknown)ThereisoneMoralPrinciple,
theLovewhichspringsforthfromawillingheart,surrenderedinservicetoGodand
Humanity,andwhichbloomsindeedsofbeneficence.
ThereisOneObjectofPraise,theBeautywhichupliftstheheartofitsworshipper
throughallaspectsfromtheseentotheunseen.
ThereisOneTruth,thetrueknowledgeofourbeing,withinandwithout,whichis
theessenceofWisdom.
ThereisOnePath,theannihilationofthefalseegointhereal,whichraisesthe
mortaltoimmortality,inwhichresidesallperfection.(alternative,source
unknown)ThereisOnePath,theeffacementofthelimitedselfintheUnlimited,
whichraisesthemortaltoimmortality,inwhichresidesallPerfection.

Conclusion

IfTHISistheSufismofH.InayatKhanandBullehShahthatisrevivedand
thrives,thenthereisahopethatpeacemayexistinthesubcontinentandindeedthe
world,evenasitwillbechallengingtothecentraltenetsofIslam.

JustasVedantaofShankarachallengedthestraitjacketedHinduismofhistimes,and
thrivedandstillliveson..andneedstobeemphasized.ItisimportantthattheOneis
emphasizedandnotmerefollowingofritualsofatimepast.
