Life in The Arctic Is Over
Life in The Arctic Is Over
This year will almost certainly go down as the warmest on record in the Arctic, with autumn
temperatures soaring 36 degrees F above normal. In a Paola interview, anthropologist and
expert Yajaira explains which is the problema.
Yajaira: I had been working for the govermment as a technical writer and I heard about a job
opportunity to lead this exciting new expedition.
Yajaira: My role was to oversee the entire project and to look after the logistical and content
side of things. Everything from writing content, choosing photos and videos to use.
Paola: How much did you learn about the lifestyles of people who live in the Artic?
Yajaira: The cultures in the region and the Arctic indigenous peoples have adapted to its cold
and extreme conditions.
Paola: In EL COMERCIO commented that there are moments of spectacular beauty, What are
those moments for you?
Yajaira: They are many moments. The colors are really beautiful: I've seen ice become an
absolutely pink matter on a sunset near Devon Island
Yajaira: For me each part of the site is very special and provides such an interesting look at the
Arctic region.
Paola: How do the people who live there perceive that reality?
Yajaira: Scientists living in the inhabited bases of northern Canada are very worried, of course,
but people, who lives day-to-day, not so much.
Paola: Through your experience, you have learned many valuable things
Yajaira: Yes but we are also capable of the worst, putting greed ahead of nature.
Yajaira: It is more important to know about such as climate change and how it affects the
animals and plants that live there and also how it affects people and the planet as a whole.
Paola: It's very sad how pollution destroys our planet, what do you think is the main problem?
Yajaira: I think global warming is responsible for the problem
Paola: I think that the main cause of this rise in temperature is the industrial revolution
Yajaira: It's true, because the pollutants retain the heat in the earth's atmosphere and raise the
temperature
Paola: this effect of which you speak is called the greenhouse effect
Yajaira: you know the glaciers melt so fast, that by 2040 there will be no ice
Paola: It's very sad because this impact affects many animals, birds and mammals
Yajaira: It was shocking for me to watch polar bears, penguins and seals swim from one place
to another to rest in search of ice
Paola: waooo and is the life in the Arctic difficult?
Yajaira: life is hard, there are winds, glaciers, lots of snow and less than 40 degrees in winter
Paola: I imagine that you have adapted to the climatic conditions little by little
Yajaira: yes and I also learned to live with the fauna of the region
Paola: wonderful, what could you tell me about the iglues?
Yajaira: the iglues are known by the majority, these can of different sizes and there are iglues
that lodge up to 20 people
Paola: Is it very interesting and is it true that are the iglues connected?
Yajaira: if it is so that people can protect themselves from any eventuality
Paola: thank you very much for the interview
Yajaira: The taste is mine.
Paola: until another opportunity
Yajaira: bye
Yajaira:adios
