LESSON PLAN

Student Name: Brittany Garvey

Subject: Anatomy & Physiology
Grade Level: 10th-12th
School: Albemarle High School
Date of Lesson Enactment: 9/20/17
Duration: 1 class

Topic:
Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs):
BIO.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific reasoning, logic, and the nature of
science by planning and conducting investigations in which
a) observations of living organisms are recorded in the lab
h) equipment are used in a safe manner;

Learning Objectives:
Students will KNOW
o The four simple epithelial tissues and their locations within the body.
Students will UNDERSTAND
o How the structure of the epithelial tissues connects with their function and location in the
body.
Students will DO
o Identify simple epithelial tissues using compound microscopes.

Materials/Resources:
Lab Instructions (25 copies)
Compound Light Microscopes (12)
Tissue Slides
o Simple squamous epithelium
o Simple cuboidal epithelium
o Simple columnar epithelium
o Pseudostratified columnar epithelium

Safety
Students need to turn off and unplug microscopes after use. Power cords must be wrapped around
the neck of the microscope and the cover placed on the microscope prior to returning it to the
shelf. All students should remain at their lab benches and pairs of students must practice
appropriate conversation in the lab to prevent any broken glass or damage to the microscopes.
Students should walk in the lab area and return all tissue slides carefully to their cases following
viewing of the tissue. Before the lesson begins, the instructor should review microscope safety
guidelines and remind students that if glass breaks they should inform the instructor immediately
and that they should not touch the broken glass. The instructor will clean up any broken glass and
dispose of it in the broken glass container.

Lesson Procedures:

Introduction
At the beginning of class I will give the students 5 minutes to collect their papers from their
mailboxes and look over the comments provided on their responses from the previous class.
o After completed the students will put the papers away and take out their notebooks and
something to write with.
I will remind students that today we will be completing a lab on simple epithelial tissues by
viewing and identifying them under the microscope.
Last class we learned about the four types of epithelial tissue: simple squamous, simple cuboidal,
simple columnar, and pseudostratified columnar.

Microscope Review
I will review the parts of the microscope with the students and provide them with tips for
microscope use. All important information is included in the attached PowerPoint, which will
also be shared with students on the website to review during the lab.
o Parts of microscope included in the presentation
Stage & Stage Clips
Objective Lenses
Base & Neck
Light & Diaphragm
Fine & Coarse Adjustment Knobs
Ocular Lens
I will give students time to ask questions on microscopes and prompt them by asking what else
they have viewed under the microscope in the past.

Simple Epithelial Tissues Lab

Students will work through the distributed laboratory assignment in their lab groups. I will have
lab groups split into pairs of students to increase individual use of the microscope.
When students have completed their lab they will return the tissue slides to the boxes, unplug the
microscope, place the cover on the microscope, and carefully walk with one hand on the base
and the other on the neck while placing the microscope back on the shelf.
When students are finished they will return to their desks and answer the discussion questions to
prepare for the class discussion when all students are finished.
Lab Debrief/Discussion
I will have each pair of students team up with another pair of students forming a group of four.
These students will have small group discussions about their results, what they saw, and pose
their own quiz questions they created last class to their group members. I will circulate around
the room and prompt discussions and help students elaborate on their ideas and responses.
Following the small group discussions, I will ask students to share some of their ideas they
discussed in their group to gauge student understanding.

Closure
I will give students 10 minutes to individually complete their lab discussion worksheet. Once
these are complete they will place them in the orange hand-in bin and pack up their belongings
for the end of class.
Stratified Epithelial Tissue Preview
If necessary, I will give students a quick preview of what we will be discussing next class and ask
them to consider where stratified epithelial tissue might be found in the body based on what we
saw of the simple epithelial tissue and that stratified means that there is more than one layer of
cells in this tissue.
Assessment
The students will participate in a small group discussion and then will individually complete their
discussion worksheet which will be handed in at the end of class. As a teacher, I will be able to
read through their responses and find any misconceptions that I should address the following
class.
The students will also be evaluated on their understanding of this material through a short quiz
the following class.

Accommodations:
The PowerPoint will be included on the website to allow students to read through the material at their
own pace. Students may remain seated in the lab area if standing for long periods of time is detrimental to
their health. The students will be given ample time to practice proper microscope techniques and view all
four of the tissues from different views. I will provide extra support by staying near groups of students
that have not used this microscope prior to this class.

Behavioral and organizational strategies: I will allow students to select their groups, but I will select the
small groups for the discussion to ensure that a variety of ideas are heard during the discussion. Prior to
the lesson, I will make all necessary copies, post the PowerPoint on the website, and check all of the
microscopes and slides before student use.
