Third Grade Update

November 3, 2017

Hello Families!

Here is what has been happening in third grade:

Reading: This week in reading, students started our nonfiction unit in

reading (Unit 2: Reading to Learn). We focused our lessons on how to
tell the difference between expository and narrative nonfiction and
how to get ready to read nonfiction.

Because we just started our nonfiction unit, youll notice that the
informational text section of the report card for reading is not graded
for the first quarter. Well share the pre and post assessments for the
first unit at our parent teacher conferences.

Writing: This week our writing investigations focused on the rehearsal

strategies for writing an information book. The third graders
investigated three strategies for organizing their writing. The
students also discussed how to create a table of contents. The
students also worked on outlining their chapters. Our Mentor
Sentence is The Man Who Walked Between the Towers.

Math: Our math classes having been working on multiplying using

arrays, skip counting, and repeated addition. Weve also been using
pictures to estimate the number of centimeters of coral creatures. We
will work on some data analysis and a few more multiplication strategies
in the upcoming weeks.

Social Studies/Science:

Our current unit in science is measurement. Students have learned how

to measure distance and mass.

Other:Important Reminders:

Parents can view report cards in Infinite Campus.
