Just Add When adding a suffix if
the root/ base word
sing + s = sings

does not follow any of read + ing = reading


the rules below. Just quick + ly = quickly
add the suffix.
Doubling In a one-syllable word,
with a short vowel
chat + in + chatting

Part 1 ending with one bat + ed = batted


consonant, hot +er = hotter
double the final
consonant before
adding a suffix that
starts with a vowel.
Doubling In a multiple-syllable
word, if the accent is
o.mit + ed = omitted

Part 2 on the final syllable, for.got + en = forgotten


and that syllable fits be.gin + ing = beginning

Drop the e When a root/ base
