The following concepts will be helpful in understanding certain parts of the review:

The spectral composition of images refers to the visual properties of an image such as
chromatic and luminescence contrasts.

The spatial frequency of an image is how much detail is in the stimulus per degree of
visual angle, so an image with small details with sharp edges will have a higher spatial
frequency than an image with larger, fuzzier details. Spatial frequency is inversely related
to the contrast of an image and there tends to be a characteristic proportion between the
two in natural images. For trypophobic images the peculiar spectral composition refers to
the relationship between contrast and spatial frequency.

Zoophobia is the fear or phobia of animals. It is recognized as a specific phobia in the


DSM-V.
