Orthopaedic Complications Low Fidelity Simulation Assignment

Topic outcomes

1) The student will be able to identify common complications related to orthopaedics

2) The student will be able to discuss symptoms of common complications

3) The student can speak to tests that may be ordered to confirm diagnosis

4) The student will be able to identify the need for treatment and what that treatment will be

5) The student will review case studies to determine the complication

Assignment:

At the end of the module the student will be expected to be able to apply the knowledge presented by
creating and role playing simulations. The patient scenarios will be completed at home and shared
during the lab session of the same week. The students will work in their prearranged lab groups; each
group member being assigned a different surgical complication. I choose this method because the
students will retain the information learned by creating the simulation and actually acting it out will
enable the student to use critical thinking skills and gain new assessment skills.

Overview:

After learning about the possible complications, preventions, and treatments for orthopedic surgeries
presented with PowerPoint the student will use that information to put together a simulation based on
the assigned complication. During the weeks lab session, the student will then share their simulation
with their group by leading their own simulation. The students will be in groups of four and the lab
assignment will be given an hour and half, 15 minutes for each simulation and the last half hour for
reflection and evaluation. After the simulations you will get evaluations forms to fill out for each
students simulation. The student will hand in their written simulation and evaluations will be handed in
by their peers.

Assignment Instructions (simulation creation)

1. The student will be handed a simulation template with the assigned complication on form
2. The student will use the information obtained during lectures and reading to create a simulation
based on the areas required by filling out the form completely (please leave no blanks).
3. The student may choose any orthopaedic surgical procedure, elective or emergent (example,
knee replacement, hip pinning)
4. Patient demographics can be whatever the student would like
5. Medical history, surgical history and reason for admission should have some relevance to the
complication (example a patient that has a DVT may have a history of clotting issues)
6. Vital signs and assessment should align with the complication
7. Prevention, tests, and treatments will also be chosen that goes best with your complication
8. The student can be creative with their potential outcome, both good or bad.

format

Low fidelity Simulation (1.5 Hours)

1. Bring this completed form completed in entirety with you to this weeks lab session
2. Work in your assigned group, a quick overview will be given at start of lab.
3. Each student will have 15 minutes to be the leader of their simulation
4. Assign each group member a different role during your simulation (Nurse, Doctor, etc.)
5. As the leader of the simulation you will be explaining the patient, similar to giving report the
next shift. Go over the basics (demographics, history, procedure).
6. After report, become the patient and explain your symptoms and vitals to the students in your
group and see if they can determine what your complication is, what test the doctor may order,
what should be done to prevent the complication, and what will the treatment may be. This can
all be done as a group discussion
7. The student will then participate in their group members simulation scenarios.
8. There will be evaluations that everyone will fill out on each team member during the last half
hour, this is also extra time if simulations run longer for any needed discussions.
Evaluation (this will be handed out during the lab session)
