Spectral Color Conundrum

2 days Materials

Data Collection

Objective: To recreate the masterminds sample set, #s1-5, using trial and error, to figure out the correct
ratios of liquid volume for the spectral colors necessary to make each 20 mL sample.

Notes:
Document your groups trials T1-T5, and final samples, #s 1-5, below, by typing in the amounts [in
mL] for each spectral color used to make the sample, and inserting a PB image for the final color
outcome.

The max volume for any sample is always 20 mL

The individual spectral colors are always whole amount of mL.
Cover test tube with thumb, flip, and shake to evenly distribute the colors.
Hypothesis
#1 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 15-5 15 mL red, 5 mL yellow
#2 - 3 colors Ratio of colors 10-7-3 10 mL Blue, 7mL purple, 3 mL red
#3 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 13-7 13 mL green, 7 mL yellow
#4 - 3 colors Ratio of colors 9-7-4 9 mL purple, 7 mL Blue, 4 mL red
#5 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 18-2 18 mL yellow, 2 mL green

1. Identify your groups final results for each sample, #s 1-5 below, by filling in each color [in bold] after the correct
ratio listed for that color needed to make the sample. *TBP = colors to be provided

Test Tube Amount of each spectral Total amount of liquid Color Outcome
color used [mL] volume [mL] [PB image]

T1 15 red 20
5 yellow

T2 10 mL blue 20
7 mL purple
3mL red

T3 13 mL green 20
7 mL yellow

T4 9 mL purple 20
7 mL Blue
4 mL red

T5 18 mL yellow 20
2 mL green

II. Analyze Results

1. Identify your groups final results for each sample, #s 1-5 below, by filling in each color [in bold] after the correct
ratio listed for that color needed to make the sample. *TBP = colors to be provided

Sample # of Ratio of Colors Groups Results Ratio of Colors Actual Value [*TBP]
# Colors Total = 20 mL Total = 20 mL

1 2 15 [ red ] : 5 [ yellow ] [ red ] [ yellow ]

2 3 10 [ blue ] : 7 [ purple ] : 3 [ red ] [ blue ] [ red ] [green

3 2 13 [ green ] : 7 [ yellow ] [ blue ] [ yellow ]

4 3 9 [ purple ] : 7 [ blue ] : 4 [ red ] [ purple ] [ blue ] [ red

5 2 18 [ yellow ] : 2 [ green ] [ yellow ] [ blue ]

2. What was your groups overall initial emotional reaction to this challenge?
We are happy about the colors we made in the end but we were amazed by how close our colors are
from the actual colors but they are still different because we used incorrect colors. (N.G)

3. How did your group choose to begin, as in, what was the groups initial step?
We assigned each person a task for a test tube so that we could complete the task more efficiently, and
after that, the next person would get assigned another test tube or task till the job was completed.(A.J.)

4. Based on the Ratios of Colors Actual Value provided by the teacher, how did your group measure up in terms of
accuracy? Support your response comparing your results with the results the teacher provided.
Based on the ratios of colors actual value provided by the teacher we got or 60% wrong and right.
Our group got test tube 2, 3, and 5 wrong because of incorrect colors being used. On test tube two we
tried multiple combinations but failed to have the correct answer because the correct answer was 10 ml
blue, 7 mL purple, and 3 mL green while our group got 10 mL of blue, 7 mL red and 3 mL green.(Z.K)

5. Based on your groups experience collecting the data, identify which sample[s] was the easiest for your group to
figure out and explain why.
The easiest sample to make was sample 1, because it required the least amount of colors and was
counting by multiples of 5 making it easy to measure in the graduated cylinder. We got both colors
correct the first try with 15 mL of red and 5 mL of yellow.(J.L.)

6. Based on your groups experience collecting the data, identify which sample[s] was the most difficult for your
group to figure out and explain why.
The most difficult test tube to make was test tube 2, because it had three color samples and one value
was only 2 mL which surprisingly impacted the color a lot. We had to decide on one color for the three
mL and ended up trying out three combination till we got a really close match which we thought was
correct. Our group had three ml of red but the actual combination was 3 mL green which came out with
the exact color.(Z.K)
