ARTIFACT:

RE T
HOW A HE PUTNAMS, AND THEIR PERSONAL AGENDA, POTENTIALLY TO BLAME
FOR T HE A CCUSATIONS OF WITCHCRAFT IN ACT I?

In Act I, Mr. and Mrs. Putnam are to blame for the accusations
of witchcraft because of their insistence on spreading gossip in
Salem. On page 1221, Mrs. Putnam is described as shiny-eyed and
very pleased when she inquires about Betty, thus indicating that
she aims to benefit from the rumors of witchcraft surrounding
Reverend Parris household. In forcing Parris to formally acknowledge
that there is witchery afoot - Let you strike out against the Devil,
and the village will bless you for it! (1222) - the Putnams fuel
the fire, planting the seed for the hysteria to come by legitimizing
it.

RATIONALE: In order for students to understand how I wanted them

to answer short answer questions (and write body paragraphs) on
The Crucible, I wrote an example paragraph to model a correct
answer. Utilizing the team teaching strategy, my mentor teacher
and I went over each part of the paragraph in class before
students were asked to write one of their own. In this
paragraph, I modeled a complete topic sentence, usage of claim,
evidence, and reasoning, citation of evidence using MLA
formatting, and a concluding statement. The paragraph was
projected at the front of the class as to have a visual
component for students.
