Exploitation deliverable: Smart Matching Algorithm

WHAT IS THE SMART MATCHING ALGORITHM?

A mechanism within the U-TURN collaborative platform
that pairs companies with the same transportation needs.
The algorithm optimises deliveries by matching loads and
available capacities of logistics service providers based
on the similarity of transport characteristics.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Based on factors such as pick-up point, destination, load type
specification, timing, and weight, the algorithm will match the
shipment with available spare capacity within the delivery network.

DEVELOPMENT CASE STUDY

One of the challenges of collaborative logistics is to appropriately
match the demand of one side with the supply of the other to obtain a collaborative
transportation plan. The smart matching algorithm uses the Nobel-winning Stable
Allocation Theory that allows the allocation of demand to the available supply. This is the
first real-life application of this methodology being used in urban logistics.

The data that was used for testing the Smart Matching Algorithm was based on real
market data of two 3PL companies which operate in Greece. Results from these
simulations indicate that an average of 34% of the total loads have common transport
characteristics that enable collaboration and optimisation to take place.
