8/31 What are good characteristics of being a good writer?

To me, a good writer is someone who has the basic mechanical grammar skills. A good writer
must be able to properly demonstrate good grammar. Also, a good writer must be able to grab
and keep a readers attention. They must be able to articulate their story or ideas in a way in
which all types of readers will be able to understand. Also, a good writer is someone who is
knowledgeable of the world around them because it may have an affect on the people reading
their work.

9/5 A time where I had to use a serious tone

A time in which I had to use a serious tone was very recent. My friends and I are planning a trip
to New Orleans for Mardi Gras and I had to use a serious tone to make them understand the
urgency in booking our hotel rooms. They would not pay attention to me when I would tell them
nicely that we need to plan this trip quickly. Also, I had to tell them that the area that we will be
going to is extremely populated because of the festivities and it was important that we reserve
and book our rooms. I had to use this tone to get them to listen to me and start to move on their
parts.

9/7Topics I see myself exploring

The topics I see myself exploring this semester will more than likely be involved with law and
the legal system. The aspects I will probably explore are the diversity in the legal system or the
current state of the legal system and black people and/or mass incarceration of black people. The
people interested in this topic may be my fellow future black law students or anyone interested in
the relationship between black people and the legal system. It is also going to be most interesting
to me because this is my future field and doing any research on it is interesting to me.

9/12 Interesting story while at Hampton.. can be funny, touching, etc

A funny story while at Hampton that Ive experienced was during my freshman year. In high
school, I did not really party so I didnt really understand how crowded and crazy parties can get.
During NSO week, there was a party for the freshmen and I was very overwhelmed at
everything. I got caught in the way of one of the fraternities strolling and basically fell down. It
was not funny at the time, but it is now.

9/19Write about the story

I thought the story was pretty interesting. The officer was shot but while it was happening, he
had a whole thought process on everything that was going on. (ran out of time)

9/21comments that you received on an essay that you found helpful

Some comments that I received on an essay that were helpful were the ones that were specific! If
there was an area that I needed to expand on, the professor would give suggestions on how to
expand instead of just saying expand or why. They helped me a lot because it showed me
exactly what my professors expected of me and allowed me to do better on my next
paper/assignment.

9/26A writer/speaker that you admire

A writer/speaker that I admire is Nikki Giovanni. Her poems that she writes and recites are just
so amazing to me. She uses a lot of vivid imagery and words that make the poems come to life.
She also writes a lot about the black woman experience, and its very relatable whether Ive
experienced it myself or I know someone who did. Simply put, her poems are really real and
authentic. They invoke emotion and I really admire her.

10/24An argument you got into and the outcome

I actually just got into an argument with my mom about the law schools I plan to apply to. She
doesnt want me to go to far but Im willing to go. She also feels like I have not done extensive
research on the schools and thinks Im picking just any school. The outcome was that we just
decided to agree to disagree because I feel the way I feel and she feels the way she feels.

10/26Change a school policy

There arent many policies at Hampton I would change. The only one I would change is the fact
that we cant wear hats in some classrooms. Sometimes, we have a bad hair day and instead of
me just missing class, I made effort to show up. Some professors will make people leave for not
taking their hats off and I think that is ridiculous. Me wearing a hat is not hindering my learning
experience, so that would be the only policy I would change.
