Differentiation is the tool that allows teachers to provide
the individual scaffolding that is needed for each student to reach the learning goals. With the tool of differentiation teacher can ensure an equal opportunity for learning for each student that passes through their class. There are three categories or students needs, readiness, interest and learning profile. Formed from these categories are four curriculum-based elements: Content- The knowledge, understanding, and skills we want students to learn Process- How students come to understand or make sense of the content Product- How students demonstrate what they have learned and are able to do after an extended period of learning Affect- How students emotions and feelings impact their learning By understand each of the three students needs teachers will be able to make the appropriate decision for the four curriculum elements to best serve these needs. It is important to remember that these needs will change as the school year progress. Making it vitaly to keep an up-to-date learning profile as well as taking the time to understand the students interest. t is also helpful to understand what is going on in the community in which your students live because what is happening outside of school will have an impact on the students needs.
