Q1) [TWO mathematicians Mr. A and Mr. B are sitting quietly in a car.]

Mr. A: It’s already 12 noon , when are we going to reach the Congress Library?

Mr. B: Don’t worry it’s a straight road and at our constant speed of 90 km/hr., we will
be there by 3:45 p.m.

Mr. A: I wonder ‘how much time’ it would have taken for us to reach there if we
would not have followed the straight road but the path followed by the point on the
front tyre touching the ground, when we started our conversation(in car)?

(Assume all distances are measured from the front tyre only) (3 marks)

Q2) [Mr. A and Mr. B are at Congress Library]

Mr. A: OMG! , look at this 19th century document.

Mr. B: Quite an old one huh….!

Mr. A: Yeah…. it contains single page manuscripts collected across the world and
each manuscript is numbered on each side starting from 1.

Mr. B: Are they in sequence?

Mr. A: (starts turning the manuscripts) yes,

(After reaching the last page)

I have calculated the sum of numbers on manuscripts… its 15000.!!

(Mr. B was also observing the numbers on manuscripts)

Mr. B: pretty fast in calculations… but pretty weak in observations…

Mr. A: what do you mean?

Mr. B: 1 of the manuscript is missing!!!

FREAK-O-MATIX
(After turning the manuscripts again)

Mr. A: ohh! Yeah I got it. The numbers on that manuscript must be X and Y?

Mr. B: Interesting! The sum of X and Y is exactly same as the diameter of our Car’s
front tyre. (In centimeter) (3.5 marks)

Q3) [after roaming around in the Congress Library for some time]

Mr. A: Hey look…what I have found! The missing manuscript!!!

It’s from Ramanujan’s dairy.

Mr. B: let me have a look at it.

Mr. A: Can you tell me f(Y) ? (3.5 marks)

Q4) [in the mathematics section of the library]

Mr. A: I have a plastic replica of a very prestigious thing in my hand.

The front has the person related to this photo:

(Mr. A shows the photo printed in a book)

Mr. B: still no clue!!!

Mr. A: the back contain some things related to each figure:

Mr. B: Eureka…I got it….its… (2.5 marks)

Q5)[Mr. A and Mr. B then go to a restaurant]

Mr. B: Hey how’s the health of your SON…heard that he was admitted in hospital??

Mr. A: He’s fine…it was just a minor ache in his stomach!!

Mr. B: By the way how old is he?

Mr. A: his age will be ‘a’ in the year ‘a^2’ …!!

Mr. B: how am I supposed to know his current age without knowing his date of birth?

Mr. A: if you add the month (M) in which he was born to his current age you will get
the square of the day (D) on which he was born!!

Mr. B: okay ….I got it…your son was born on D-M-Yr? (2 marks)

Q6) [still in the restaurant]

Mr. A takes out his mobile……gives it to Mr. B

http://www.axisvnit.com/freakomatix/
FREAK-O-MATIX

Mr. A prepares a table on a page and gives it Mr. B…

Mr. A: connect these to the replica we saw in the library.. .and replace the ????

United States 13
???? 11
Russia or Soviet Union 9
United Kingdom 6
Japan 3
Belgium 2
Australia 1
Finland 1
Germany 1
Israel 1
Italy 1
New Zealand 1
Norway 1
Sweden 1
Vietnam 1

Mr. B: it’s so simple…what next?

Mr. A: Now can you calculate the shortest distance between the capital of ???? and
our city?

You can assume the earth to be a perfect sphere with r=6400km!!!! (4 marks)

Q7) [still in the restaurant]

Mr. A: hey I have a very cool game in my mobile.

The rules are very simple.

The no written on a cell indicates, bombs hidden in the cells surrounding it (including
itself)

You have to click on the cell which you think has the bomb inside it and the cell will
turn blue else it will remain white. Find all the bombs as fast as possible.

(after the 1st try)

Mr. A: That was quick…but not anywhere near my best timing!!

Mr. B: Let me try once more!!!

http://www.axisvnit.com/freakomatix/
FREAK-O-MATIX

Mr. B: Hey the blue cells together made pattern of the digits P and Q in respective
turns. (1+1 marks)

Q8) Mr. A: Now choose any 2 random real numbers between P and Q (or Q and P)!!!

Mr. B: Okay… What next?

Mr. A: Choose two more!!

Mr. B: Done that too!!

Mr. A: Keep repeating the procedure for as many times as you can!!!

Mr. B: What non-sense!!!

Mr. A: Now can you tell me the average of the minima of the numbers that you have
selected every time?

Mr. B: Yeah got the question and the answer ‘Z’ too. It’s not that difficult if you think
about it twice!! (4 marks)

Q9) [earlier during the day]

Mr. A and Mr. B visit the funeral of their Friend’s grandfather!

There they see the manager of the only graveyard of a small village T.

Manager: Due to the spread of swine flu in our town each person in our village has
‘3*Z’ % probability of death.

Mr. B: what is the total population of your village?

http://www.axisvnit.com/freakomatix/
FREAK-O-MATIX

Manager: Its 1000!! How many minimum no graves should I ask my men to dig so
that the probability of the number of graves being sufficient in case of deaths is 90%?

Mr. A: I think you should dig ‘R’ graves!!! (4 marks)

Q10) Now the mathematicians go to their friend to console him.

After some time they start talking about the will of his grandfather.

Their friend explained it to them.

My grandfather has a property of 1000,000,000 Rs.

Mr. A: Whopping amount!! Every 1 should get at least 1000 Rs.

Friend: yes, the will ensures that the min amount given should be 1000 rs. Actually
the will says that the money should be divided in the (powers of R/2)*1000

(i.e., (R/2)^0*1000,(R/2)^1*1000 etc)

Mr. B: Then everyone will get a hefty amount

Friend: No! The will says the same amount cannot be given to more than 6 persons.

Can you divide the amount suitably?

Mr. B: Then it’s simple! The no of persons getting ‘1000’ is……..the persons getting
(R/2)^1*1000 is…..etc…. (2.5 marks)

across the following POSTER

Mr. B: Hey look! Exciting way to earn some easy bucks. The answers are…………!!
