Homes
Most British people live in houses not flats. Most houses have gardens.
Daily Life
Most office workers go to work at about nine o’clock in the morning and finish at about five
or six in the evening. People don’t go home for lunch. People usually eat a big meal in the
evening – they just have a snack at lunchtime.
School Life
Children start school at about nine o’clock and finish at about half past three. Most children
have lunch at school. Children start school when they are four or five years old and leave
when they are sixteen or eighteen.
Shops and Restaurants
Shops open at about nine o’clock in the morning and close at about six in the evening.
Normally, they don’t close for lunch. Most shops open on a Sunday, too. Many supermarkets
stay open twenty-four hours, but most pubs and restaurants close at about eleven o’clock in
the evening.

L) Read the text and circle the correct alternative.
Bruce Newton comes from Norwich in the east of England, but he doesn’t live in England. He
lives in Tokyo in Japan. He is an accountant in a language school there. He lives in a small flat
on the fifth floor of a tall building in a small street in Tokyo. The school is not very near his
home. It’s about 15 kilometres away, so he can’t walk to work. He goes by bus. He always
leaves home at eight o’clock and arrives at school at five to nine. He usually does some work
in the bus on his way to work. Bruce’s school is near a railway station. It’s very big, and it has
a lot of students. He likes his office. It is by the reception desk. It is very small and quiet.
There are some pretty trees outside his window. He works from nine o’clock to a quarter to
one, and then he goes to the refectory for lunch. After lunch, he starts work again at two
o’clock in the afternoon, and he finishes work at five in the evening. On his way back home
from work, he often buys some fresh vegetables and his wife cooks the dinner, but Bruce

TV. He likes cowboy films very much, but his wife isn’t watching TV. She’s looking after their
baby daughters, Jennifer and Mary, in the living room, because she doesn’t like cowboy films.
