There was a time when workers (1) were allowed to/ weren't allowed to get out of their
chairs. They (2) had to/ didn't have to sit there for up to eight hours a day. They (3) were
allowed to/ couldn't take a ten-minute coffee break, but after that they (4) had to/ didn't need
to ask permission to leave their desks. Now, all that has changed. In modern offices, people

(1) You've eaten too much and now you feel sick.

(2) There was a job advertised in the newspaper. You decided not to apply for it. Now you
think that your decision was wrong.
(3) When you were younger, you didn't learn to play a musical instrument. Now you regret
this.
(4) You've painted the gate red. Now you think that it doesn't look very nice.
(5) You are walking in the country. You would like to take some photographs but you didn't
bring your camera.
8. Complete the dialogue with might, must, can't or may. (7 marks)
A: Now, Mr Jones. I have some questions for you.
