How can GMOs be used to help the world?

The primary purpose of this inquiry is for me to find out the positives from GMOs.

There are many people and organizations pointing out the negatives that GMOs can have;

however, I want to know the possible positives they can have on the world. One big reason for

this inquiry is for me to find out more about bioinformatics because the world of GMOs owes its

existence to this field. I am a computer science major and we must pick a concentration and

bioinformatics is one of the possible concentrations. The thing is, I do not know much about

bioinformatics because it is a relatively new field and there are not many people in it. I have

always loved programming and certain areas of biology, and it seems like I might enjoy

bioinformatics because it combines the two. So, the main reason I want to do this inquiry is so I

can find out what I can do with bioinformatics that can help the world.

The reason I am not doing the inquiry on the topic of bioinformatics is because I am

currently taking the first bioinformatics class right now and I have learned a bunch about the

basics of the field. I want to narrow down my inquiry to focus on GMOs because I think that

they will have the largest impact on society. I already do know that there are benefits for using

GMOs for increasing crop yield, however I am also aware of the controversy surrounding many

GMOs due to the uncertainty surrounding the health effects they have. Also, I am aware of

ethical problems regarding modifying organisms that are not plants. Despite all the controversy,

I do believe that this world has a place for GMOs and that they are able to help solve issues such

as pollution and population growth.
