For base 5 we learned that we count without using the number five. Numbers are grouped by

powers of five. For example, after four units it would be one block and zero ones written as

1
05
After 4 blocks, we would build a flat which would be written as this

05
means one flat no bases and zero ones. The diagram below illustrates how to build and

0
visualize when counting/dealing with base 5.

1 unit

1 block

1 flat

We can also add, subtract, and multiply using base five.

To add, using the example 23 base 5+ 12 base 5

23

+12

40

3 ones plus 2 ones equals 1 block 105, we write 0 and regroup the block to the tens column and

add 2+1+1=4 blocks the answer is 405.

To subtract using the example 105-35=25

This is one block - three ones which equals 2 ones base 5

To multiply using the example 235*25

235 First multiply 3*2 which is equal to 6 but in base five it is written as 115

* 25 We write the 1(from the ones place) and regroup the block to the tens place

1015 Next we multiply 25*25=45 (ones) after that we add the additional block to make 1 flat

the final answer is 1 flat 0 blocks and 1 one.

things to keep in mind

5 flats is written 10005

10 flats 20005

11 flats 21005

15 flats 30005
