Lesson Class #: 4 Course Grade 6

Title/Focus Dec 4 - 7 Math

Probability

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

4. Demonstrate an understanding of probability by:
Identifying all possible outcomes of a probability experiment.
Differentiating between experimental and theoretical probability.
Determining theoretical probability of outcomes in a probability experiment.
Determining experimental probability of outcomes in a probability experiment.
Comparing experimental results with the theoretical probability of an experiment.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lessons students will be able to:
1. Determine the theoretical probability of different colours in a pack of smarties/m&ms
2. Determine the experimental probability of different colours in a pack of
smarties/m&ms
3. Solve various questions regarding theoretical probability
4. Solve various questions regarding experimental probability

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Buy m&ms or smarties
Book laptops

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
Start by acknowledging what weve learned in probability so far. We just 3 min
learned about comparing EP and TP. We are going to solidify this
knowledge with a fun game, Probability with smarties.
Have students take out their math textbooks and turn to page 339.
Have students take out their critical thinking books and find someone to
work with.

Body Time

Probability with 1. Hand out game packet and candy to each student. 60 min
Smarties 2. Briefly g o over the rules of the activity and what they
need to do. DO NOT EAT THE CANDY UNTIL YOU
ARE DONE WITH YOUR EXPERIMENT.
3. As you are answering the questions you can eat the
extra candy but dont throw it, obviously.

When students are done:

Mathletics
Critical thinking book

Lesson 4/Review 1. Go over questions 1 on page 339 with the whole 60 min
class. Have students do 2-4 with their table groups.
2. Have students do questions on page 343-344 for
review of the entire unit. Homework if not done,
they have a test the next day.
3. Go over any questions that are causing multiple kids
difficulties.

When students are done:

Mathletics
Critical thinking book

Critical Thinking 1. Explain that students are to work with whoever they 60 min
Books want, on questions in their critical thinking books.
2. Yes they can work on the floor.
3. Answer any questions that students might have
about what theyre working on.

Conclusion Time

Ask if the kids enjoyed doing an experiment like this? What was their 2 min
favorite part? Does doing things like this make probability easier?
Assessment
Walk around and check students answers.
Have students check work in the back of the book and tell me how many they got
wrong.
