Lesson Class #: 2 Course 20-3 Math

Title/Focus Histograms
March 7

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

● GLO: develop spatial reasoning
● SLO: solve problems that involve creating and interpreting graphs, indlucing:
○ Bar graphs
○ Histograms
○ Line graphs
○ Circle graphs
● SLO 1.1: determine the possible graphs that can be used for a given data set, and explain the
advantages and disadvantages of each
● SLO 1.2: create, with and without technology, a graph to represent a given data set
● SLO 1.3: describe the trends in the graph of a given data set
● SLO 1.6: explain, using examples, how different graphic representations of the same data set can
be used to emphasize a point of view

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lessons students will be able to:
1. Solve problems involving histograms
2. Describe the difference between a bar graph and a histogram
3. Create a histogram based on a frequency table

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

● SMART TV
● Chromebooks
● Histogram hike worksheet

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

● Tape histogram questions around the room
● Plug laptop into SMART TV

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
● min

Body Time

Lesson - 1. Definition of a histogram. ~30 min

histograms a. What’s the difference between a bar graph
and a histogram? How are they similar?
2. Go over steps on how to make one.
a. What’s wrong with the first histogram we
saw? First example was bad since each
interval uses the same number from the
previous interval.
3. Work through example of making a histogram
a. What’s the range?
b. What would the intervals look like if they
had a width of 100?
4. To make a histogram we use a frequency table. Fill
out the table as a class, make the histogram
a. Table of values listing how many things are
in each interval
5. Do I need to clarify anything?
6. Mathletics problems

Histogram 1. Hand out question sheet for activity. ~30 min

activity 2. Students can pair up or work individually. Assign
students a different question to start at.
3. As students work on each question, circulate the
class and ask questions to see if students need help.
4. If students finish early, Mathletics problems (also a
good backup)

Conclusion Time

● How was the histogram activity? ~2 min

Assessment
● Student conversations
● Mathletics problems
● Histogram worksheet
