STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Glycoconjugates are important biopolymers containing one or more carbohydrate units linked
covalently to other biomolecules by process of glycosylation, such as amino acids (to generate
peptidoglycans), proteins (glycopeptides and glycoproteins), lipids (glycolipids and
lipopolysaccharides), and other small molecules (glycosides).
They are play an integral role in biological systems as they are involved in cellular adhesions,
cell-cell interactions, cell-matrix interactions, receptor mediated endocytocysis and form
docking site for recognition of extracellular signal molecules like growth factors. They also aid in
cellular destruction, transport and localization.
Glycoconjugates carrying carbohydrate antigens are primarily localized on the plasma-
membrane surface of cells and serve as excellent biomarkers at various stages of cellular
differentiation. Moreover, they also play important functional roles in determining cell fate
such as self-renewal, proliferation, and differentiation.
The functions and versatility of glycosylated biomolecules are as a consequence of their ability
to transmit sophisticated information, incredibly broad and the potential applications of
glycoconjugates are therefore, correspondingly wide. For example, lectins have been implicated
in physiological processes ranging from receptor mediated endocytosis, glycoprotein quality-
control, the interaction and subsequent invasion of pathogens, and the triggering of effects that
lead to the release of biomodulators.
In addition to communication events, show greater resistance to thermolysis and proteolysis
and are used for Protein probing activity. Their application based uses span from drug delivery
and targeting, vaccine and immunotherapy, pathogenesis control, avoiding immunogenicity in
xenotransplantation and other therapeutic strategies.
I have been introduced to aspects of glycobiology a through intermediary metabolism course in
MSc 1st year. MHRD GIAN course will help with obtaining a thorough understanding of the
processes which are essential for successful exploitation in pharmaceutical therapies with
carbohydrates..
