Home Assignment 3
Problem 1
For the rectangular beam shown in Fig. below,
(a) Draw a shear-force diagram.
(b) Assuming the beam is un-cracked, show the direction of the principal tensile stresses at middepth at
points A, B, and C.
(c) Sketch, on a drawing of the beam, the inclined cracks that would develop at A, B, and C.

Problem 2
Problem 7.2 from Arthur Nilson book, 14th edn page 259.
Problem 3
Figure below shows a simply supported beam. The beam has # 3 Grade 40 double-leg stirrups with Avfyt =
8.8 kips and four # 8 Grade 60 longitudinal bars with Asfy = 190 kips. The plastic truss model for the beam
is shown in the figure. Assuming that the stirrups are all loaded to Avfyt
(a) Use the method of joints to compute the forces in each panel of the compression and tension chords and
plot them. The force in member L11–L13 is MU12/jd.
(b) Plot Asfs = M/jd on the diagram from part (a) and compare the bar forces from the truss model to those
computed from M/jd.
(c) Compute the compression stress in the diagonal member L1–U7 The beam width, is 12 in.

Problem 4
Solve Example 7.4 from Arthur Nilson book, 14th edn page 255. You need to provide explanations on the
calculations/steps done in the example (grade will depend on explanations provided).
