Kuala Lipis Brief History

Kuala Lipis is a mukim and capital of Lipis District and was once the capital of
Pahang in 1898 until 1955. In 1955, the capital of Pahang was then moved to Kuantan
making Kuala Lipis fell into a decline stage. Kuala Lipis was a gold mining centre before
the arrival of British in 1887. Situated at the confluence of Sungai Lipis and Sungai
Jelai, Kuala Lipis has a glorious past, being one of the earliest inhabited place in
Pahang Darul Makmur, long before the British came, Kuala Lipis was already a major
trade centre for gold, jelutung, gutta perca and other jungle products. The British then
made Kuala Lipis the state capital of Pahang Darul Makmur in june 1898.
During British colonial era, Kuala Lipis played a vital role for the economy of
Pahang. Due to this, British government had assigned Resident to Kuala Lipis.
Therefore, as we travel through Kuala Lipis, we can see a lot of old buildings and
legacies left by the British during their time of colonization of the country.
