Summer Reading Essay

AP Literature and Composition

Ms. A. King, Instructor

For this assignment, you will write a two-page

essay (typed, MLA format, double-spaced, 12-
point font, etc.) on Lord of the Flies or Pride
and Prejudice for a 100-point grade.

You have already been given an MLA-styled example

essay to follow for formatting purposes.

Below is the prompt for the novel you have chosen on

which to write your essay. Be sure to use the thesis
formula provided to you in class. Here is the prompt:

 Many works of literature contain a character who intentionally deceives others. The
character’s dishonesty may be intended either to help or to hurt. Such a character, for
example, may choose to mislead others for personal safety, to spare someone’s feelings, or to
carry out a crime. Choose a novel or play in which a character deceives others. Then, in a well-
written essay, analyze the motives for that character’s deception and discuss how the
deception contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole.

Remember to support position(s) by referring specifically to the text and using quotes
from the novel wherever appropriate; hence, citing your source (the novel itself). This
means that you may not use any reference (Spark notes, Wikipedia, a published critic,
and an article, etc.) to help you develop your thesis or to provide support for any analysis
in your essay. You can ONLY use your opinion based on the reading of the text. You are
not to plagiarize for this will result in a grade of ZERO. The rubric has been provided.
This will be the rubric used for most, if not all, of your course writings.

** Be sure to include a Works Cited Page that gives the full citation for the novel you
have chosen.

All papers must be emailed to me through the class website by 11:59 p.m. on
Thursday, January 11th. Late papers or papers delivered by hand will not be
accepted.
