CASE STUDY

MEGAN.
MASTERS IN ART PRACTICE/PHD
After graduating with a degree in Fine Art in 2011, I came to
Wrexham Glyndwr University and started a full-time Masters in
Art Practice, which I completed in 2012. Throughout my Masters I
developed my art practice and became increasingly interested
in the area of arts in health. After graduating I won the ‘Out and
Beyond’ Axis Wales Award.

I was nominated by Wrexham Glyndwr for this award and it meant

that I was partnered with the curator of Oriel Davies, Newtown who
supported my professional development and art practice for the
following year. Throughout this year I also wrote my PhD proposal
and enrolled at Wrexham Glyndwr University for a part-time PhD in
November 2013.

I carried on to do a PhD as I really enjoyed the supportive

environment of the university. I also felt that there were many
different opportunities to engage in other projects which improved
my employability.

I really enjoyed my Masters’ and was supported fully. My supervision

for my PhD has been excellent and I have been encouraged and
supported to develop my research. I have been able to work on
numerous external projects, which has been vital for progressing
my career. I have also been involved in different research projects
and events which is vital experience for my aim of becoming a
lecturer. My Phd is practice-led and the facilities at the University and
specialist knowledge from numerous lecturers has meant that I have
been able to create a wide range of different artworks and learn
skills in different materials.

Wrexham Glyndwr University provides a supportive environment

which encourages you to reach your full potential. There are lots of
different opportunities and projects available which allow you to
develop your subject whilst also improving your employability.

ALVARO.
MSC AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING
Wrexham Glyndwr University offered me the opportunity to develop
my love for Aeronautical Engineering with its HNC in Aeronautical
Technology Summer School. This allowed me to fuse the knowledge
I previously gathered in Spain and France into one double-degree
BEng (Hons) in Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering.

The course had ties with the Airbus Wing Factory and Composite
Centre in Broughton, whilst the degree was accredited for Chartered
Engineer registration by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), the
Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineering
and Technology.

I was awarded the AeroMSc bursary by the RAeS and the Royal
Academy of Engineering, and they offered to cover my fees in any of
their accredited universities in the UK (backed by companies such as
Airbus and Rolls-Royce).

I chose Wrexham Glyndwr again for their accreditation and their

facilities at the St Asaph campus in the world-class Centre for Solar
Energy Research (CSER).

I enjoyed the self-learning experience when researching and

developing my MSc thesis. Being able to create innovative and
ground breaking research with a facility like CSER has given me an
opportunity to further expand my horizons of knowledge in different
engineering fields.

I am proud to have aided in advancing humanity forward and

changing the world, by adding my ground breaking work on the
manufacturing of solar cells to worldwide scientific knowledge.

The staff support and qualifications I got at Wrexham Glyndwr is one

of the reasons I am now on a wonderfully successful career path.

HUW.
EXECUTIVE MBA
Wrexham Glyndwr University was recommended to me by a
colleague who studied their MBA there a few years ago.

However, the three most prevalent reasons for choosing the university
were the flexible approach to part-time study, the course structure
as modules are more contemporary than most MBA programs (many
are delivered by seasoned experts and renowned practitioners
rather than academics), plus the course is intensive (a part-time MBA
is generally three years, this course is completed in approximately 18
months).

The course is a level 7 program, therefore academically it’s right up

there, but the sheer amount of work also needs a disciplined mind
set.

Meeting new people from different industries and different job

functions allows each to better understand business problems for
many different perspectives. You form very close, potentially lifelong
relationships with these people.

The course has really helped with my confidence; I am now much

more self-assured talking to senior or executive managers about
work-related tactics and strategy, but also more confident generally
meeting new people.

Wrexham Glyndwr is a friendly environment and the eMBA is

positioned to attract established professionals. This means the
learning is facilitated by the lecturers and given depth and
perspective from the cohort.

I have already received a promotion into a senior

of starting the program. Without doubt the eMBA
program facilitated this achievement, but equally
prepared myself to take on the new challenge.

CASE STUDY

MONIKA.
POST-COMPULSORY EDUCATION
AND TRAINING PGCE
Postgraduate qualifications were the natural next step for me
after completing my undergraduate studies at Wrexham Glyndwr
University. The goal I wanted to accomplish was to be a lecturer, a
tutor and a mindful life coach. My degree was in Alternative Therapies
for Healthcare and I have continued this path through additional
training like alternative therapies and stress management; I wanted to
be able to offer various therapies with a focus towards holism.

By the time I’d completed my degree, I was already running my own

business called Monya Holistic Therapies. I had a year’s gap before
entering postgraduate study, but throughout was busy working on my
continuous personal and professional development.

I studied the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, splitting

my time between my full-time job, planning and teaching lessons at
West Cheshire College, plus running my own business. It’s difficult to
choose a single aspect of the course I enjoyed most, but my teaching
placement was one of them; I’ve managed to link with people I’d like
to work with in the future. I also enjoyed modules such as Negotiated
Study and Innovation.

My greatest achievement on my course was receiving a job offer from

the college straight after completing my placement. Although I’m still
a trainee teacher, I’m happy and proud that my manager noticed my
potential. I’ve been proud to be a student ambassador for Wrexham
Glyndwr; it’s an institution that treats its students as names rather than
numbers. The University provides great support for people whatever
their background, plus I love the ethnic diversity here… I’m very
happy to have made friends from around the globe.

PGCE qualifications allow me to accomplish my mission to run an

international holistic training centre. I believe it’s about knowing
your mission and staying focused until you get there, which can be
achieved with a huge dose of determination and patience.
