Clinton: Now is the time
for peace in Middle East

ist ideology in the Middle East
is a major reason why time is

Iran’s suspected nuclear
ambitions have surfaced as
a new motivating factor for
a Mideast resolution. There
have been growing Israeli
warnings that the nation might
take military steps to blunt
Iran’s nuclear program, and
even some of Israel’s Arab
neighbors have shown con-
cerns.
The administration believes
that a successful Mideast
peace deal would limit Iran’s
ability to use Mideast tensions
to justify its behavior.
“I think that time is not
on the side of either Israeli
or Palestinian aspirations for
security, peace and a state,”
she said. Iranian-sponsored

After the meeting in Egypt,
Netanyahu and Abbas will
likely see each other, as well
as President Barack Obama,
again on the sidelines of
the upcoming U.N. General
Assembly session in the third
week of September.
The talks will face their
first tough test shortly after
the U.N. gathering, when an
Israeli freeze on settlement
activity in the West Bank is
due to expire. The Palestinians
have threatened to walk out
of the talks if the freeze is not
extended. The Israelis have
said the freeze will be allowed
to expire.

DELPHOS — Jefferson
High School offers a personal
finance course to help prepare
seniors to enter the adult world.
Treasurer Brad Rostorfer said
no extra payroll expenses have
been accrued by teaching the
class because no teacher has
been hired especially for it.
The course has simply been
added to the responsibilities
of an existing staff member.
However, this year there are
constraints that caused leaders
to integrate online learning
into the curriculum.
“We offer a personal
finance course that’s required
for all seniors and they can
take it online or through our
family consumer finance
course. That’s only one peri-
od and we can’t fit all the

they can do it here at school
by going to the library,
which has about 30 comput-
ers. They can come in early

still here. If not, they’ll have
to do it at home,” he said.
A health class was taught
online last year because of
a gap between an outgoing
teacher and a new health
instructor. That course
was taught through an out-
side group but the personal
finance course is the first
permanent online course in

Cape Cod on Friday, disrupt-

the Eastern Seaboard after

have shown that people of
any age who keep their minds
engaged in active education
live longer and delay memory
loss and lethargy. Faced with
an ever-changing job mar-
ket, older workers are return-
ing to school to succeed in
their fields and to begin new
careers. Most of all, going
back to school gives seniors a
feeling of accomplishment.
By state law, all Ohio
residents age 60 and older
may attend classes at state-
funded colleges and universi-
ties at no cost. The program
allows seniors to take college

Today is a special day. Not
just because it’s Saturday,
and not just because it’s the
first Saturday in September,
which happens to be one of
my favorite months. Today is
special because it is the day
two very special people in my
life, Missy Renee Longsworth
and Casey Edward Crisp,
are committing to a lifetime
together in marriage. (Do you
get the idea that there’s a lot
of specialness going on here?
And, no I don’t care if “spe-
cialness” isn’t really a word.)
While you might be think-

a cute noun
gloriously sentimental but a
true marriage cares about one
thing only — commitment.
I never understood the
meaning of commitment until
I got married. I thought I
knew; in fact, I thought I had
it mastered. One thing mar-
riage has taught me is that
every preconceived notion I
had of love was astonish-
ingly off. It’s a cinch in the
beginning, in that honey-
moon stage. The endorphins
do all the work for you! It’s
when those wear off and the
real test of love and commit-
actually embrace and follow
them days, months, and years
later. I never got why people
cried at weddings until I had
my own. Now I’m blubber-
ing in the audience. Who
knows what will happen to
my friends after their wed-
ding today? Will they change
jobs? Will they move far
away? Will they have kids?
(They seem hesitant about
that one; I’m guessing in part
because they’ve met mine.)

• The Army, the Navy, the State of
Florida, and the National Red Cross rushed
rescue parties to the Florida Keys where
officials feared hundreds had died and at
least that many more had been injured in
one of the worst hurricanes in years. Red
Cross received a report from Tavernier that
100 died there. Seemingly authentic reports
from Rock Harbor said 75 members of a
camp of war veterans had been killed.

seems) can get so caught up
in the details of planning for
that one day that they lose
sight of what the day is even
really about. A true marriage
could care less about center-
pieces, floral arrangements or
even Vera Wang gowns. Not
that any of those can’t be

learned that love is a verb,
and a tough one, not just a
cute noun. Love is every-
thing that 1 Corinthians 13:4,

Like you, I may have yawned
through that part of the cere-
mony when I was a spectator
because I didn’t really grasp
what it meant until I was part
of it — part of this LOVE
that everyone talks about. It’s
virtually impossible to imag-
ine the powerful feeling until
it is felt. Until you feel it in
your bones, from the tips of
your toes to the ends of your
hair, you won’t know.
Just as so many people
can focus on planning their
wedding day and lose sight
of the bigger picture, it’s just
as easy for that day to come
and go and forget what the
vows mean. It’s one thing to
repeat them at the altar and
an entirely different thing to
so cherished. Marriage inevi-
tably presents trials and
tribulations, for me ones I
never dreamed possible, and
I haven’t been in the game
very long. It’s also caused me
more heartache than anything
has in my life…but at the
same time I have felt love in
such a wonderful, incredible,
shout-it-from-the-rooftops
capacity I never thought I’d
experience. It’s like the hard
times are there to test the both
of you, whether it be your
morals, sanity, or emotional
strength, and each time you
make it through, even times
when it seems as if there’s no
imaginable way you will, you
somehow do. And you fall
in love all over again. And
you emerge an even stronger
couple than you were before.
It’s hard to explain. But ask
anyone who’s married and
they’ll tell you. After today,

nearing an end but Buckeye
State anglers need not hang
up those fishing rods for the
year just yet, according to the
ODNR Division of Wildlife.
Fish are just coming out of
their summer feeding slumps
and fishing now can be as
good as traditional springtime
opportunities.
“Anglers have a wide vari-
ety of choices right now,”
explained fish management
supervisor Phil Hillman.
“Virtually any species of
fish that can be caught in the
spring months can be caught
now if anglers have the incli-
nation. Just go against the
grain of thinking that fishing
is done by Labor Day. Don’t
lose a great opportunity.”
Read below for species
specific tips and tactics for
the fall season:
Inland channel cat-
fishing is excellent in late
September and early October
since they forage heavily on
gizzard shad. Cast nets are
legal for gathering shad from
inland waters but not Lake
Erie. Anglers are encouraged
to review the 2010-2011 fish-
ing digest before netting bait
fish. Using 1- to 2-inch shad
in their entirety or cut up
and then suspended about 5-6
feet under a bobber is a suc-
cessful method. Any of the
Portage Lakes, including East
Reservoir, North Reservoir,
West Reservoir, Long Lake
and Turkeyfoot Lake (Summit
County) would be good choic-
es to target. Other good lakes
include Atwood Lake (Carroll
and Tuscarawas counties),
Mosquito Lake (Trumbull
County), Leesville Lake
(Carroll County), Tappan
Lake (Harrison County),

body crashes you, you just say
‘Hey man I’m sorry. I didn’t
mean to get into you.’ He never
said that.”

a third-generation racer in his
first full season at NASCAR’s
top level; he thinks he knows
why.
“I haven’t got it all figured
out but there’s a little bit of a
boys-only club going on there
and over time we all make
our way into it if you just
keep knocking on the door,”
Keselowski explained. “When
you’re knocking on the door,
it’s not a lot of fun and some-
times you get kicked back out
of the house. I’m trying to
make my way in it and you’re
not going to get in there by
being a pushover.”
His father, the 1989 ARCA
champion, sees his son’s treat-
ment as a form of hazing.
Keselowski has repeatedly
made it clear he’s no pushover.
His first knock on that imagi-
nary door came at Talladega
Superspeedway last year when
he pushed Edwards toward the
finish line and didn’t lift when
Edwards tried to block his pass
for the win. Edwards went
airborne, upside down, sheet
metal spewing in his wake as
his car sailed into the safety
fence in a scary crash, while
Keselowski grabbed his first
Cup victory in only his fifth
start in NASCAR’s top series.
A feud was born.
After Keselowski collided
again with Edwards early in the
March race at Atlanta, Edwards
retaliated by intentionally
wrecking Keselowski, sending
him airborne.
Now, they’re on probation
for the remainder of the season
because of a frightening accident
on the last lap of a Nationwide
race at Gateway International
Raceway in mid-July. Edwards
intentionally drove into the
back of Keselowski on the last
lap seconds after Keselowski
had made contact in a pass for
the lead. Edwards won the race,
leaving Keselowski’s Dodge in
tatters in a chain-reaction crash
that included nine other cars.
Keselowski also angered
Busch in the Nationwide race
at Bristol two weeks ago while

him and went on to win the
race. Keselowski finished 14th.
Busch celebrated that win
by mockingly rubbing his eyes
like a crying baby and was
greeted with a chorus of boos.
Keselowski promised revenge
over the public address system
and had some choice words
for Busch the next day during
driver introductions for the Cup
race.
Probation seems to be hav-
ing a positive effect on Edwards
and Keselowski. They joked
about each other in separate
media sessions at Circuit Gilles
Villeneuve before Sunday’s
Nationwide race and had no
run-ins on the track.
“On the racetrack, I think
we’re better,” Edwards said.
“All of our issues have just
been on the racetrack. I think
I see a little bit more respect
there but time will tell.”
With the Nationwide season
winding down, Keselowski,
barring a total collapse, is clos-
ing in on his first NASCAR
title. Edwards, the 2007 series
champion, is 365 points behind
him in second place with 10
races remaining.
“As a person, I think it
gives credibility to my career,”
Keselowski said. “It will cer-
tainly give me some more con-
fidence. The confidence bank
goes up and down. There’s
deposits and withdrawals.”
While Keselowski has blos-
somed in NASCAR’s second-
tier series, he’s struggled in
Cup. His average start this
year is 23.2 and his average
finish 22.5. He started ninth
and finished a season-best
12th at Darlington, match-
ing his finish at Martinsville,
and has four DNFs, crashing
at Atlanta, Talladega, Sonoma
and Daytona in July.
What he does have is the
attention of race fans across the
country and that’s a good thing
for the sport.

There aren’t even that many
doctor visits because there’s just
not much they can do to slow
the disease’s deadly advance.
And there certainly aren’t any
easy answers; what do you tell
an 11-year-old boy who says
he doesn’t want Christmas to
come this year because his dad
probably won’t be able to speak
to him by then?
“I remember the doctor say-
ing to hope I had cancer,” Hall
says through slurred speech, a
common symptom of the dis-
ease. “We know so much more
about that. Seventy years after
Lou Gehrig had it, no medica-
tion, no treatment.”
The one thing Hall has is
plenty of support.
Last Saturday’s race at
Chicagoland Speedway may
end up being Hall’s final race
as a member of the pit crew. So
Fisher, the team’s driver and
team owner, decided to surprise
Hall by putting the logo for the
family’s ALS awareness web-
site, careyshope.com, on her
race car.
“We’re a family and we sup-
port our people 100 percent,”
Fisher said. “This is something
really little in the big picture but
I’m hoping that by doing this,
that our fans will

lateral sclerosis

Lou Gehrig’s Disease, after the
baseball star who is believed
to have died of it in 1941 —
causes degeneration of nerve
cells in the brain and spinal
cord, leading to poor muscle
control and even paralysis.
According to the ALS
Association website, half of all
people affected with ALS live
at least three or more years after
diagnosis, 20 percent live five
years or more and up to 10 per-
cent live more than ten years.
The 40-year-old Hall began
having muscle problems near
the end of last year. He spent
most of New Year’s Eve in
the hospital for tests, then was
diagnosed with ALS a few days
later.
Hall told Fisher that he
would stay on her pit crew
as long as he could. During a
recent race at Mid-Ohio, Fisher
said the team gained two spots
with a fast pit stop.
But as his muscles continue
to deteriorate, he won’t be able
to perform his duties much lon-
ger.
Hall also owns Hall’s
Motorsports Refinishing, Inc.
in Indianapolis, which paints
race cars for several teams. He
had a special design on his
own helmet for Saturday’s race,
bearing the names of fellow
ALS patients.
Fisher, who also has partici-
pated in breast cancer aware-
ness efforts, was surprised by
the lack of mainstream atten-
tion to ALS.
As part of their awareness
effort, Hall and his family are
trying to drum up attention
for an Oct. 2 ALS walk in
Indianapolis. But truth be told,
he’d rather be at the racetrack.
For now, Hall is trying to
appreciate every last moment
and laugh whenever he can.
He jokes that having his tongue
not able to keep up with his
thoughts “keeps me out of trou-
ble.”

Reuse foil to save money
DEAR SARA: I need
ideas for storing foil. How do
you store saved foil to reuse?
I don’t have any extra space
in the drawers in my kitchen,
so I keep the foil in a plastic
zipper bag in the cupboard.
The bag falls out nearly every
time I open the cupboard. It is
so annoying. There has to be a
better way, but I’m stumped.
Suggestions appreciated. --

have too many pieces at a
time if you reused the same
one before taking a new piece.
But that doesn’t help you now
if you have a lot saved in a
baggie. Your bag idea is a good
one. You can buy a small plastic
hook with double sided tape
(3M makes a hook that adheres
to the wall or cabinet but won’t
damage it) and hang the baggie
on it. Or store the flattened
pieces where you store your
cookie sheets, in the oven, and
remove whenever you use the
oven. Put it back when you’re
done, save the box and tube that
your foil comes in and reroll it.
Or store flattened pieces under
similar packages of brown
bags, wax paper, plastic wrap,
etc. If you’d like to reuse a few
quickly so you have a few less
to store, crumple them and use
as a pot scrubber, or clean the
grate on your grill or toss a foil
ball into your dryer to reduce
static cling. Or wrap your celery
in it so it lasts longer.

Two 16-year-olds were
talking about how much
they were enjoying the third
season of “True Blood.” I’d
heard about HBO’s hit show.
But what’s so special about
vampires? As if we don’t
have enough scary stuff going
on in the world: wars, floods,
famine, the economy, oil
spills, Bristol Palin dancing
and hurricanes. We need
vampires to scare us?
I have nothing against
vampires, zombies,
werewolves and shape-
shifters, (I do, however, have
a serious beef with wood
sprites), but the success of the
unreadable and unwatchable
“Twilight” books and movies
made the prospect of sitting
through a TV show based on
another series of bloodsucker
books very low on my list.
But “True Blood” turned
out to be a different kettle
of blood. I am addicted to it.
First of all, this is not a show
about vampires. This is a
show about hot, sweaty, high-
definition sex. And lots of
it. I cannot name an X-rated
film with as much skin as the
average episode of this toothy
wonder. The fangs and the
bloodsucking are just there
to keep small children from
getting bored. This show
is doing for sex what “The
Sopranos” did for whacking,
what “Deadwood” did for
swearing and what “Dexter”
is doing for serial killing.
It’s brought TV sex out of
the closet and into the family
room where it belongs. Who
doesn’t want to sit in front

Prof in plague scare sets off airport shutdown

MIAMI — The suspicions airport security
officials had when they saw the metal canister
grew when they learned about the man who
brought it in from the Middle East: a scien-
tist who sparked a bioterrorism scare after
he reported missing vials of plague samples
seven years ago.
Officials shut down most of Miami
International Airport overnight, roused nearby
hotel guests from their beds and detained Dr.
Thomas Butler until Friday morning, when
he was released without charges, a senior law
enforcement official said. The official spoke
on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t
authorized to release the information.
Tests on the canister found nothing dan-
gerous, according to a release from the FBI’s
Miami field office. Homeland Security
spokesman Nicholas Kimball said the item
resembled a pipe bomb.
Butler’s former lawyer said the incident
appeared to be a “fantastic overreaction.”
Butler, 70, is a world-renowned plague
researcher who quickly became the focus
of a federal investigation in 2003 when he
reported that 30 vials of plague samples pos-
sibly had been stolen from his Texas Tech
University lab.
He was later acquitted of smuggling and
illegally transporting the potentially deadly
germ, and of lying to federal agents about the
missing vials. Jurors found Butler guilty of
the mislabeling and unauthorized export of a
FedEx package that contained plague samples
he sent to Tanzania.
He was also convicted of fraud and theft
and sentenced to two years in prison for
defrauding Texas Tech about illegally nego-
tiated contracts he had with pharmaceutical
companies with which he also had clinical
studies contracts.
Before Butler’s trial, leading scientific
organizations expressed concern about the
criminal case against him and its effect on
infectious disease research. Four Nobel lau-
reates said in an open letter that Butler had
been “subjected to unfair and disproportion-
ate treatment.”
Jonathan Turley, a George Washington
University law professor who represented
Butler in his unsuccessful appeals, said the
scientist “has spent his entire life protect-
ing and healing people in some of the most
impoverished areas of the world. He would
never do anything that would endanger peo-
ple.”
The senior law enforcement official
told the AP that a Transportation Security
Administration inspector noticed an odd con-
tainer around 9 p.m. Thursday as Butler was
going through customs. He had arrived on a
flight from the Middle East, where he had
been teaching at a Saudi Arabian university.
The inspector ran Butler’s name through
a database and discovered that he had been
tried on the plague-related charges. Officials
decided to evacuate the airport and detain
Butler, who cooperated fully, the law enforce-
ment official said.
A Miami-Dade police bomb squad spent
hours scouring the airport. Between 100 and
200 passengers were evacuated from four of
the airport’s six concourses. Airport road-
ways and a hotel near the airport’s interna-
tional terminal were closed down. Police and
airport officials described the shutdown of the
concourses as a public safety precaution.
Butler was released after tests showed that
he, the container and his other belongings did
not contain any hazardous biological material
or explosives, the official said.
The canister was used to transport dead
bacteria samples and was a legitimate experi-
ment, said another government official who
also requested anonymity to discuss the ongo-
ing investigation. Without naming Butler, the
official said the scientist is a professor at Ross
University, a medical school in the Caribbean
island of Dominica, and on a teaching assign-
ment in Saudi Arabia.
Passengers, workers and others were
allowed back in just as the airport was expect-
ing the first of 1,500 passengers on flights
between 4 and 6 a.m. alone — and more
thereafter.
“Everything’s back to normal,” airport
spokesman Greg Chin told the AP.
Butler’s 2003 report of missing plague
vials set off a frantic search that ended when
Butler gave FBI agents a written statement
in which he admitted a “misjudgment” in not
telling his supervisor that the vials had been
“accidentally destroyed,” according to court
records. At trial, Butler testified that FBI
agents forced him to make the admission to
calm the public’s fears.
Turley said he hoped to speak later Friday
with the researcher. He said the Miami inci-
dent “appears to be a fantastic overreaction,”
and is “ironic because we defeated all the
national security counts in the case.”

Emirates — A UPS cargo
plane with two crew members
on board crashed shortly after
takeoff Friday outside Dubai,
officials said.
The state news agency
WAM, quoting the General
Civil Aviation Authority,
reported that the “bodies of
two pilots” had been found
at the scene, but UPS did not
confirm that.
The plane went down
inside an Emirati air base
near a busy highway intersec-
tion about 10 miles (16 kilo-
meters) southeast of Dubai’s
international airport. WAM
said the crash occurred in
an unpopulated desert area,
suggesting there may not
have been casualties on the
ground.

site, which was shielded from
the highway by walls. Migrant

WELLINGTON, New
Zealand — A power-
ful 7.1-magnitude earth-
quake struck much of New
Zealand’s South Island early
today and caused widespread
damage, but there were just
two reports of serious injuries.
Looters broke into some dam-
aged shops in Christchurch,
police said.
The quake, which hit
19 miles (30 kilometers)
west of the southern city of
Christchurch according to the
state geological agency GNS
Science, shook a wide area,
with some residents saying
buildings had collapsed and
power was severed. No tsu-
nami alert was issued.
GNS Science initially
reported the quake as magni-
tude 7.4, but later downgrad-
ed it after re-examining quake
records. The U.S. Geological
Survey, in America, mea-
sured the quake at 7.0.
Christchurch Mayor Bob
Parker declared a state of
emergency four hours after
the quake rocked the region,
warning people that continu-
ing aftershocks could cause
masonry to fall from dam-
aged buildings.
The emergency meant
parts of the city would be
closed off and some buildings
closed as unsafe, he said.
Minister of Civil Defense
John Carter said a state of
civil emergency was declared
as the quake was “a sig-
nificant disaster,” and army
troops were on standby to
assist.
Parker said the “sharp,
vicious earthquake has caused
significant damage in parts of
the city ... with walls col-
lapsed that have fallen into
the streets.”
Chimneys and walls had
fallen from older buildings,
with roads blocked, traffic
lights out and power, gas and
water supplies disrupted, he
said.
“The fronts of at least five
buildings in the central city
have collapsed and rubble is
strewn across many roads,”
Christchurch resident Angela
Morgan told The Associated
Press.
“Roads have subsided
where water mains have bro-
ken and a lot of people evacu-
ated in panic from seaside
areas for fear of a tsunami,”
she said, adding that “there
is quite significant damage,
really, with reports that some
people were trapped in dam-
aged houses.”
Christchurch fire service
spokesman Mike Bowden
said a number of people had
been trapped in buildings by
fallen chimneys and blocked
entrances, but there were
no reports of people pinned
under rubble. Rescue teams
were out checking premises.
Christchurch Hospital said
it had treated two men with
serious injuries and a number
of people with minor inju-
ries.
One man was hit by a
falling chimney and was in
serious condition in inten-
sive care, while a second was
badly cut by glass, hospital
spokeswoman Michele Hider
said.
Christchurch police
reported road damage in
parts of the city of 400,000
people, with a series of sharp
aftershocks rocking the area.

some streets where rubble

showed parked cars crushed
by heaps of fallen bricks, and
buckled roads.
“There is considerable
damage in the central city
and we’ve also had reports of
looting, just shop windows
broken and easy picking of
displays,” Police Inspector

Zealand’s National Radio.
