Instability and Plastic Collapse of Steel Structures. Edited by L. J. Morris.

1983. Granada Publishing, London. 638 pp. Price: £40.00 hardback.

This book contains the papers presented at a recent conference at

Manchester University held in honour of the retirement of Professor
Michael H o m e , one of this country's most eminent academics in the field
of structural engineering. The papers in the book reflect Professor
H o m e ' s own research interests including plasticity, frame behaviour and
plate behaviour.
The conference event must rate as a major occasion in structural
engineering research and recalls especially the early pioneering work on
plastic behaviour performed at Cambridge and the work on bridge
behaviour in the Merrison era.
The noteworthy line-up of authors marks the popularity of Professor
Horne and the volume of papers acts both as a historical record and an
indication of the existing state of the art in structural engineering
research.

Durability of Structural Adhesives. Edited by A. J. Kinloch. 1983.

Applied Science Publishers, London. 360 pp. Price: £40.00 hardback.

This book relates to the general area of joining material using high
strength adhesives. One chapter in particular relates to steel adherends
and considers strength properties, failure mechanisms, durability and
surface preparation requirements. Examples quoted do not relate to
constructional steelwork although a description is given of the use of
adhesives in stiffener bonding and in the construction of honeycomb
structures in the aerospace industry. The use of adhesives may develop in
areas such as steel decking or cold form section. Of more obvious
