Scottish Salmon Farming 101

- Scottish Parliament inquiry opens "in early 2018"

A new report - Scottish Salmon Farming 101 - published by the Global Alliance Against
Industrial Aquaculture details 101 reasons why Scottish salmon farming is "the worst thing in
the world" (the phrase used by George Orwell to describe the torture chamber - Room 101 -
in his book Nineteen Eight-Four).

The Scottish Parliament is scheduled to start an inquiry into salmon farming "in early 2018"
following a petition lodged by Guy Linley-Adams on behalf of Salmon & Trout Conservation
Scotland. In advance of the inquiry led by the Rural Economy and Connectivity Committee,
the Scottish Parliament information centre (SPICe) have been tasked with carrying out a
"review of the literature on the environmental impacts of farmed salmon in Scotland". On 20
December 2017, the Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform Committee reported:

Parliament"
A report commissioned by Salmon & Trout Conservation Scotland - Impacts of salmon lice
emanating from salmon farms on wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout - was published last
week by the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (read more via The Scotsman: "Call for
curb in fish farms as study shows pest risk to wild fish" and The Times: "Fish farm lice are
killing wild salmon").

"Investigating the problems of Scottish salmon farming is like opening a can of worms," said
Don Staniford, Director of the Global Alliance Against Industrial Aquaculture. "The Scottish
Parliament's inquiry into salmon farming has an onerous task on its hands. Scottish salmon's
very own Room 101 is crammed with mass mortalities, lice infested salmon, toxic chemicals,
infectious diseases, dead seals and enough other horrors to make your flesh creep."

In advance of the Scottish Parliament's inquiry, the Scottish salmon farming industry have
been busy lobbying MSPs. Just before Christmas, Norwegian-owned Marine Harvest
(Scotland's largest salmon farming company and #1 killer of seals) sent MSPs a copy of their
latest newsletter which included: "Dramatic media headlines give the impression that
Scotland's salmon farms are swarming with sea lice" [1].
The Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) sent MSPs in December 2017 details of
new video case studies "providing a snapshot of where we’re getting it right". SAIC
informed MSPs that "more video case studies are already in production and will be released
in 2018" [2].

The Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation (SSPO) has also been busy promoting their
"prestigious", "delicious" and "nutritious" Label Rouge salmon.

The SSPO issued a press release in December 2017 claiming that Scottish salmon was the
"Best Farmed Salmon in the World". The SSPO also claimed in a 2014 press release:
"Scottish Salmon is the Best – and That’s Official!".

In September 2017, Seafood Watch published a series of assessments on salmon farming with
Scotland ranked the worst in the world behind Norway, Chile and Canada. The 'red' (avoid)
ranking for Scottish farmed salmon - which scored a woeful 2.65 out of 10 - was attributed to
poor performance in terms of chemicals, disease and escapes (read more via "Red Light for
Scottish salmon: Scotland is ranked worst in the world").
"The unpalatable truth is that Scottish farmed salmon is the worst in the world," concluded
Staniford (award-winning campaigner and author of 'The One That Got Away: Marine Fish
Farming in Scotland' published by Friends of the Earth Scotland back in 2001; 'A Stain Upon
the Sea' in 2004, 'Scottish Farmed Salmon Exposed' in 2008; 'The Five Fundamental Flaws of
Sea Cage Salmon Farming' in 2014 and 'Red Alert for Label Rouge' in 2017). "Cramming
hundreds of thousands Atlantic salmon - a migratory species - in cages and then dousing
diseased fish with toxic chemicals or forcing them into a 'Thermolicer' washing machine is a
torture chamber. The Scottish salmon farming industry is a nightmare with the senseless
slaughter of seals - including pregnant and lactating mothers - together with mass mortalities
estimated at over 15 million per year. The Scottish Parliament enters Scottish salmon
farming's Room 101 at their peril - Scottish salmon is farmed and dangerous."

Subject: Scottish aquaculture sector embracing innovation support, prove new video case
studies

This week saw the launch of a new video case study campaign by the Scottish Aquaculture
Innovation Centre (SAIC), highlighting the way in which the Scottish aquaculture sector is
embracing support to innovate and grow.

The videos feature the perspectives of a range of contributors: from public sector funders,
enterprise agencies and institutions, to private sector companies.

Championing the vital relationship between innovation and the future competitiveness of
Scotland is Dr. Stuart Fancey, Director of Research and Innovation at the Scottish Funding
Council, while Elaine Jamieson, Head of Food and Drink at Highlands and Islands
Enterprise, talks about our recent collaboration on Accelerating Aquaculture Innovation – the
new £1m match-funding programme to help small to medium enterprises (SMEs)
commercialise new supply chain innovations.

You can hear directly from three such Scottish SMEs, with contributions from Alban Denton,
Managing Director at Loch Duart; Michael Tait, Chairman of the Scottish Shellfish
Marketing Group; and Dr. Tom Ashton, Operations Director at Xelect.

Providing the academic perspective meanwhile, is Professor Hervé Migaud, Director of

Research at the University of Stirling’s world-renowned Institute of Aquaculture.

The videos are being promoted across a week-long social media campaign and via our
December e-news, but you can view them here. Alternatively, you can read the full media
release here.

More video case studies are already in production and will be released in 2018.

Best wishes,
Heather.
