Philosophy of Education

Ashley Blannon
Introduction

I believe that education is the core of one’s being.

• Vital to obtain a proper education to become

successful as an adult

• Key factors to consider:

❖ Person’s environment
❖ Commitment alongside teacher and parents
❖ Curriculum
Purpose of Education
I believe that the purpose of education is to pass on knowledge for all generations to
come.
• Keep history from repeating itself
• Builds a better society
❖ People can function properly in mainstream society

• Become more technologically advanced

• More successful than parents
❖ Parents want their children to be more successful than themselves
Learning Environment

I believe that a child’s learning environment is a key factor in order for them to
receive a proper education.
• Urban and rural areas produce less successful adults
❖ Lack of materials and essentials needed to thrive

❖ Children become products of their environments

❖ Not enough extracurricular activities or after school programs to provide guidance and a safe
place

❖ Single parents do not have the time to be involved in child’s life

As a child in elementary school, I was involved in many clubs inside and outside of
school. I attended an after school program called L.A’s Best where I was able to get
help with homework and participate in extracurricular activities.
Commitment to Social Justice
I believe that it is a teacher’s job to adapt to the needs of their students no
matter what their background is.

• Diversity is key
❖ Children need to feel comfortable at school no matter what race or ethnicity
❖ Allows students to learn from one another in a cultural aspect
• All students should have equal opportunity to a proper education
Curriculum
I believe that teachers should have sufficient background knowledge in the
content that they are required to teacher.
• The basics
❖ Foundational skills and the basics help to provide a proper education
❖ Helps with processing information and becoming problem solvers
• Common Core Standards
❖ Some standards offer a more “hands-on” approach (i.e., modeling in math)
❖ Students are more engaged and learning from one another (becoming “experts” and
teaching one another to show what they have learned)

• Social skills
Teacher
I believe that the key to producing successful children stems from having a
well-rounded teacher.

• Resilience
❖ Very important to be flexible and have the ability to adapt to whatever comes your way
❖ The more you know, the more your students will know
• Let them know you are listening
❖ Showing an interest in certain topics will get the students engaged
❖ Base lessons on real life experiences
❖ Connecting lessons to things that the children are interested in will help you as a
teacher to connect with them
