Before the trip: The Gold Rush Game
The class will be divided into groups of three or four people. Players will sit
around a map which shows four routes to the gold fields of California. Each
group will have one die that players will roll to determine who goes first. The
person with the highest number will take their turn, then the other players
around to the left. Notice that the four routes on the map connect four cities
along the the East Coast with the area of Sutter’s Mill in California. The player
who goes first will leave for California from

-Boston, Massachusetts -New York City, New York

-Richmond, Virginia -Savannah, Georgia

During the Trip
Students will have to do a Scavenger hunt about Water. The students will learn
about the true life replica of water and learn the importance of water during
the Gold Rush.
Post Lesson Plan: Digging for Gold
Once we return to school, each student will receive 3 chocolate chip cookies
and a toothpick. They will have the chance to pretend to be gold miners and
see what life was like for them. Using the toothpicks, they will chip away the
cookie in order to pick out the chocolate chips as if they were “digging for
gold”.
