Have you ever had toothache? Here’s one of the reasons why.

Toothache is more and more common among worldwide population.

What should we do?

See a specialist as soon as the pain starts!

Teeth have included in the crown and the root a soft tissue called the pulp. The dental pulp contains
nerves, blood vessels and lymphatic tissue. If any of the content of the pulp becomes diseased or
injured, pain will occur. Patients will feel intense, sometimes throbbing discomfort, sensitivity to hot
or cold drinks and food and even swelling around the tooth, gums or face. Most patients cannot
localize the soreness on a particular tooth. When the pain has an inflammatory cause, a disease
called pulpitis, endodontic treatment is necessary.

What is endodontics?

Endodontics is the dental specialty concerned with the study and treatment of the dental pulp and
the pathologies which occur in the dental root canals. Commonly called root canal treatment,
endodontics has tremendously evolved in the past decades and its applications have immensely
improved the quality of dental treatment.

What causes the pain?

People may experience pain if there is a tooth decay, trauma or if there is a gum disease. What is
more, the inflammation of the pulp is usually associated with a bacterial infection.

Can we prevent it?

The best way to prevent toothache and pulpitis is by trying to avoid dental disease, like tooth decay.
Doctors recommend a healthy and careful diet, with little sweets, cakes, chocolate. In addition,
regular and correct oral hygiene like brushing of the teeth and flossing at least once a day can keep
any condition away.

Last but not least, usual visits to specialists are required for a better inspection of the oral cavity.
They should be done every 3 to 6 months!

What can a doctor do for us?

During a root canal treatment, if the damage is irreversible, the specialist carefully removes the pulp
inside the tooth, cleans, disinfects and shapes the root canal and places a filling to seal the space.

If the damage is reversible, it can be treated without the pulp removal. Instead doing a filling for the
example in the case of decay, will help the pulp to heal

In many cases, patients are predisposed to infections and prior to the endodontic treatment are
given prophylactic antibiotics.

Always pay attention to toothache! It can hide many conditions and it can reveal serious illnesses
of the oral cavity.
