“Jamaica tourism remains strong despite Caribbean hurricanes”
This year’s hurricane season brought powerful storms that bruised much of Caribbean’s tourism brand-
but not Jamaica’s.
Despite the hurricanes (Irma and Maria), the island has been making more than $2.3 million in tourism
earnings so far. However, despite this success, the country is constantly struggling to market its tourism
brand while protecting its environment and holding on to its unique cultural heritage.
This week (as in November 27,2017) a three-day “Global Conference on Jobs and Inclusive Growth” will
be hosted in Montego Bay. The conference opens Monday and ends Wednesday.
This event is sponsored by the United Nations World Trade Organization, the World Bank and the
Government of Jamaica, with more than 150 tourism experts and professionals attending the conference.
The goal of this event, according to Jamaica tourism minister and host Edmund Bartlett, is to promote
sustainable tourism that create good jobs, opportunities for inclusion and education and assist in cultural
heritage preservation for Jamaicans.
Key stakeholders of tourism in in financial, intellectual, the hotel/hospitality groups, the cruise lines,
leading agencies and donor countries will gather together to discuss ways they could empower the small-
and medium-sized tourism entities in Jamaica.
Bartlett believes that this conference is “a step in the right direction,” for Jamaica to kickstart its
independence from foreign exports.
“If the system is not built to respond to the demand of tourism, the sector has a tendency to become too
dependent on foreign imports,” Bartlett said.
