The modernization of jeepneys in the Philippines is one of the programs that the Duterte’s
administration aims to accomplish, with a plan to slowly phase out the old jeepneys with a electronic
jeepneys. That being said the jeepney operators, jeepney associations and jeepney drivers questioned the
plan to modernize the jeepney industry, as it will affect their livelihood since the proposed standard
electronic jeepney is not cheap. The Government reasons was mainly focused, in the environmental
issues surrounding the jeepney as it emits smoke that’s adds up to the problem of pollution in the country.
While electronic jeepneys does not emit such smoke, on the other hand the operators are struggling with
livelihood consequences regarding the modernization program as it would mean another burden of
expenses to be able acquire an electronic jeepney.
