Why Would Anyone Set A Purpose For Their Life?

December 11, 2010 ·

Have you ever asked anyone a general question on which way you should go from here and
they responded with “it all depends on where you want to end up?”
Well that’s the question we all should ask ourselves, “Where do I want to end up at the end of
my life”
After reading several books on the subject of goal setting and achieving I found that Napoleon
Hill’s Think and Grow Rich explains in great detail about setting a purpose. Although he refers
to it as ‘A Definite Chief Aim’.
Think and Grow Rich was one of the first self-development books I picked up and read. A lot
of words jumped out at me and resonated with my soul. However the following words really
stuck with me:
“Truly, thoughts are things, and powerful things at that when they are mixed with definiteness
of purpose, persistence, and a burning desire for their translation into riches, or other material
objects.”
When you focus on a purpose for you life, the process will transform your mind into a powerful
magnet that begins to attract to you the necessary people and circumstances for you to
accomplish your desire. Defining a purpose is the first step in turning your invisible desires
into a physical reality. Without a clear map for your life, it’s all too easy to drift through life, like
a ship without its rudder. The power of setting a purpose helps you to organize, direct and
harness the power of your mind.
Once you have a clear distinction about what it is that you want and why you want it, you can
follow the steps set out by Napoleon Hill to bring your purpose alive:

1. Write a Clear Description of your Definite Chief Aim.

Bruce Lee followed the Think and Grow Rich philosophy. His purpose was to be the first
highest paid Oriental super star in the United States. He intended to give the “most exciting
performances and render the best of quality in the capacity of an actor. Starting 1970 I will
achieve world fame and from then onward till the end of 1980 I will have in my possession
$10,000,000.”
Bruce went on to achieve his goals, becoming the most famous and richest martial arts movie
star in the world during his time. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1973 at the age of 33.

2. Include a Clear Statement of What You Intend to Give in Return.

There is no such thing as something for nothing. For you to achieve what ever your greatest
desire is, you must give something in return for that desire. Oprah Winfrey’s purpose was to
make a positive difference in the lives of millions of people. She stated “As far back as I can
recall, my prayer has been the same: Use me, God. Show me how to take who I am, who I
want to be, and what I can do, and use it for a purpose greater than myself.” As you know,
she went on to achieve phenomenal success for herself and many others by focusing on that
clear statement. She is said to be worth well over 2 Billion dollars today.

3. Believe You Can and Will Attain Your Definite Chief Aim.

Whatever you attain in life is limited by the size of your belief. A way to bring your desire into
your life, you must keep thinking thoughts of having it. Autosuggestion is a technique used by
all successful people to attain anything they want. Autosuggestion, or affirmation as it’s often
called, is self-suggestion. As described in Think and Grow Rich, autosuggestion is “the
agency of communication between that part of the mind where conscious thought takes place
and that which serves as the seat of action for the subconscious mind.” These are the
dominating thoughts that one permits to remain in the conscious mind and will reach and
influence the subconscious mind.
In other words, you must ‘magnetize’ your mind with positive affirmations. By visualizing,
imagining and feeling yourself already in possession of your desire, you will attract all
necessary resources possible to achieve your purpose.
Another great example of carrying out these steps was accomplished by the actor Jim Carrey.
In 1987, at the beginning of his career, Jim was a comic and part-time restaurant worker. He
dreamed of fame and fortune in the entertainment world. He applied the ‘autosuggestion’
technique along with constant visualizations. He also wrote out a check to himself for $10
million and dated it for Thanksgiving 1995. He also added in the memo section of the check
“for acting services rendered.” Well in the fall of 1995, he accomplished his purpose by
signing a $10 million contract for the film “The Mask”.

4. Take Inspired Action.

When you listen to your inner-voice, you will get ideas to call someone, or attend a specific
event or take some class. These suggestions are the universes way of attracting the
necessary resources you need to accomplish your desire. You must take action on these
ideas. It’s your intuition leading you step by step in the direction of your purpose.

5. Persevere.

Have you ever heard the phrase “Stay the course”. Of all the examples I’ve given above, the
individuals new they needed to persevere. With perseverance, comes doubts, difficulties,
obstacles, etc. You will not have a smooth ride. Knowing this upfront and fueling your burning
desire, you will be able to ‘stay the course.’ Thomas Edison new that the dominating thoughts
of his mind will transform themselves into physical reality. When he was attempting the
creation of the electric light bulb he had to persevere through 10,000 different experiments
before he successfully realized his dream.
Visualize and saturate your mind with your definiteness of purpose. Daily concentration on the
end results by seeing, feeling and believing that you’re already in possession of your desire
will bring it closer to you. You must become what you think about most of the time. It’s a law.
There is no way that it cannot.
There is one guarantee in life. If you don’t have a dream, then no dream will come true.
