1. The volume rate of flow, Q, through a pipe containing a slowly moving liquid is
πR 4 ∆ p
given by the equation Q = , where R is the pipe radius, ∆p the pressure
8µl
drop along the pipe, µ the dynamic viscosity, and l the length of pipe. Find the
dimension of Q.
2. If V is a velocity, l a length, and v a fluid property having dimensions of L2T −1 ,
find the dimensions in both FLT and MLT systems the following combinations:
(a) Vlv , (b) Vl / v , (c) V 2 v , (d) V /(lv ) . Which one of them is dimensionless?
3. A parameter called Froude number is defined as Fr = V / gl , where V is a
velocity, g the acceleration of gravity, and l a length. Determine (1) The
dimension of Fr . (2) The value of Fr for V = 5 ft / s , and l = 2 ft .
4. The density of a certain liquid is 2.2 slugs / ft 3 . Determine its specific weight and
specific gravity.
5. A Newtonian fluid having a density ρ and a kinematic viscosity ν flows past a
fixed surface. Due to the non-slip condition, the velocity at the fixed surface is

zero, and the velocity profile near the surface is given as −   .
U 2 δ 2 δ 
Determine the magnitude of the shearing stress developed on the plate.

6. A layer of water flows down an inclined fixed surface with the velocity profile
shown in the following figure. Determine the shear stress that the water exerts on
the fixed surface for U = 2 m/s and h = 0.2 m. The dynamic viscosity is 0.001
Pa.s.
