SUGAR SMART SUMMIT AND STUDENTS

Dear Grant,

I am writing in regard to the Carlisle SUGAR SMART project, which launched on Friday 19 th
January and involved students and staff from Carlisle College.

Not only did your students help to cook delegates a fabulous lunch as part of our launch, but others
also produced an exceptional project film, which was premiered at the launch event (we hope you
enjoyed it). At all levels I was blown away by the outstanding talent of the students, creativeness,
dedication, work ethic and professionalism. I have attached a few images of our journey to the final
edit.

Your media students worked tirelessly with me to create the film, based on a brief. They created an
outstanding final product, which has been picked up by the national team and several social media
contacts including: Public Health England (North West), Sofia Nadur (the co-founder of a healthier
drinks SME and an innovator nudging companies all over the globe to make products healthier - a
retweet to 12.2k followers!), Carlisle City Council leader, and many others. Some of the areas we
had to capture during filming were somewhat challenging due to the nature of the partner (e.g.
filming at the hospital). It took a huge level of trust from our partners to allow us access, but all
students demonstrated a maturity and comprehension of the situation (with support) to capture
some fantastic footage. In fact we’d like to create some shorter snippets to share on social media
and the national team are keen to feature the film / work on their website. Well done!!

Whilst there are so many people who have been involved in this work to thank, I would appreciate
it if some recognition could go to the students (Alice Dunt, Grant Lywood, Jasmine Denney,
Richard Dent, Hayden Leeks, Josh Hoggart, Brad Vaughan and Amy Andrews). Also Ed Cooper
(who I know has now left) was fundamental to getting this project off the ground, early filming and
this was picked up by Paddy Sweeney in his absence. Paul Robson has also supported students
to create a wonderful lunch for delegates and also contributed to the design of SUGAR SMART
recipes; John Sherrington has been a fantastic partnership link and really keen to create a better
food offer for students in the refectory as part of the journey; Andy Dodds and Christine Foxton
have enabled and juggled timetables for the College to be able to host the event. All have been
exceptional staff members to work with and I believe have gone above and beyond to work in

partnership and give the students a real life experience, creating outstanding outcomes. Please
share this note with them and pass on my sincere thanks – not only from me, but from all involved.

I will of course follow this up with a letter for each of the student’s portfolios and do hope to work
with them again soon. I have already presented them with a certificate of recognition from the
project.

Thank you so much once again, and for reaffirming what fantastic partners, staff and pupils we have
within our wonderful city. Thank you for everything you do within the City.

We look forward to working with you again,

Kind regards

Emma
