 Damili Festival

 The Damili Festival is being held annually on the last Sunday of December.

 All the baranggays of the said town participated in the competition. One contingent produced and displayed

a giant damili. All of the dancers wore colorful costumes with designs inspired by the damili.

 The festival is being sponsored by the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts.

 This is a thanksgiving event for the town of San Nicolas in Ilocos Norte for the blessings she receives.

 The yarns are made from cotton and dyed from the sap of a plum called sagut. These are abundant on the

lands north of Luzon.

 The abel, however, goes back to the Pre-Colonial Era where ladies were once required to know how to

weave looms. Believe it or not, these products were even bartered for gold and are sometimes used to pay

for taxes. Its quality was so good, it managed to threaten Spain’s textile industry.

 Burnayan is a potter’s village where from a mound of tight sticky clay dug out from the riverbank, the dark

and heavy burnay jars are individually shaped by-hand on a potter’s wheel and fired in an open kiln.

 Highlight of the visit

 LA BULAQUENA. Literally meaning "the woman from Bulacan," this portrait of a woman wearing a

Maria Clara gown is one of the few paintings of Juan Luna that depict Filipino culture.

 ENSUENOS DE AMOR. The lady in this oil on wood painting is Maria de la Paz Pardo de Tavera, Luna’s

wife whom he killed by gunshot because of jealousy.

 THE PARISIAN LIFE. According to studies, the lady in the painting represents the Philippines because its

silhouette mirrors the shape of the Philippines and its relationship with its colonizer, the Spain.

 SPOLIARIUM. Antonio Dumlao, a Filipino artist that specializes in art restoration, was commissioned to

give this obra maestra a facelift after it was sliced into 3 parts because the Spanish government had to ship

it as a gift to the Philippines.
