This project study covers the flowability or workability of freshly poured concrete
specifically in hot weather climate of the GCC region , notably the Sultanate of Oman. In this
report , it was attempted to use a special concrete mix called Self Compacting Concrete (SCC ) in
various amounts of superplascticisers which are 1.25% , 1.50% and 1.75 % by using 0.41 as the
fixed water cement (w/c) ratio.
Also , normal concrete is used in two different ranges of w/c ratios ; that is , 0.50 and 0.41
and these results compared with that of SCC to check the difference both in compressive strength
as well as workability . For SCC , flow test was performed while for for the normal concrete control
mix , slump test was used. Both slump test and flow test were used to compare the workability of
these concretes . Also , compressive cube strength tests was done for each mix after completing 7
days and 28 days.
The results shows that flow of the self compacting concrete was relatively high while the
normal concrete exhibits no flow but little slump . It was found that 1.25% of super-plasticiser is
the best type to use in self-compacting concrete , because it yields the highest compressive
strength Fcu of 65.80 Mpa with 680mm flow within 7.16 sec. In fact , many researchers advice
using self – compacting concrete in structural elements with deep and narrow spaces rather than
using normal concrete . It seems also that self- compacting concrete is the better mixture to be
used without vibration while casting Reinforced Concrete Structures.
