Idea’s for Art History classes Summer of 2017

Two part lesson/activity

Exploration (field trip) and Restoration of History though Art

Learning Intention - Students will experience traveling back in time as we visit

the Conference House and learn about its history. Participants will discover first hand while
walking in the foot steps of many famous people that Staten Island was a very important place
to be during the American Revolution.

Warm up - Before taking our walk around the grounds, we will warm up by
introducing 17 century exercises, Dum bells, Fencing, and Farming. ( show Pictures)
However, we will be doing various stretches, knee lifts, and foot swirls to warm up our
feet.

Motivation - Participants will be motivated by positive reinforcement and

encouragement

Mini lesson - Participants will answer a few questions about the Conference
House and its history.
1. Has anyone ever visited the Conference house before today?
2. Can you tell me one thing you may know about the Conference house?
Participants will be able to touch the brick and walk on the grounds were Benjamin
Franklin, John Adams, Edward Rutledge walked.
They will learn about the Peace conference that took place there on September 11, 1776.
They will learn about Lord Howe, who was a commander of British forces that had a
three hour meeting that ended with another 7 seven years of conflict.
They will learn about Captain Christopher Billop keeper of the land.
Guided Activity, upon our return
Benjamin Franklin, go fly a kite. This can be store bought or we can make them

1. Lay the plastic triangle on the table

2. Take one of the Paint Sticks and place it from one point of the triangle to the bottom
of the triangle.
3. To attach the two, we will need to put our string through the holes at the points of
the plastic and the paint stick.
4. Repeat this step with the second stick.
5. When the sticks are attached, and before we attach the spool of thread, we will take a
key and loop it through our string and tie it. Then we will attach a long spool of kite
string to our kites.

If we buy the kites from the store we can follow the instructions, and then we can go fly
our kites.

Individual work - Participants will work independently, with reinforced

instruction.

Materials needed - Paint sticks or any large sticks we can find, keys, kite
string, plastic table cloths. OR Store bought kites

Summary - Share When the project is compete the participants will be able
to fly their kites, just as Benjamin Franklin did.
